The Green Bay Packers have experienced a turbulent season. After a strong 5-1-1 start, the Packers stumbled with consecutive losses, regained momentum with a four-game winning streak, but then faltered again, suffering key defeats to Denver, Chicago, and Baltimore. The Packers were stunned in their loss to the rival Bears.
With the NFC North on the line, the Bears scored 10 points in the final 1:59 to tie the game before winning in overtime 22-16. Now, as the Packers prepare to travel to Minnesota for their regular-season finale against the Vikings, they have responded to their recent defensive challenges by adding a two-time Pro Bowler to the secondary.
The Packers Make a Major Addition to their Secondary
According to Jordan Schultz, the Packers have claimed former Pro Bowl defensive back Trevon Diggs.
This is unusual as Diggs, despite a strong career with the Cowboys, parted ways with the team on odd terms.
“My understanding of the Trevon Diggs situation is this: after the #Cowboys finished their Christmas game vs. the Commanders, Diggs requested with HC Brian Schottenheimer to stay in Washington for the holiday since he’s from the area and his family stays there,” Schultz reported.
“Players often ask for – and are usually granted – additional family time during the holidays if the schedule makes sense (Dallas played Thursday).”

The Cowboys, however, had no interest in fulfilling his request.
“Schotty denied the request,” Schultz continued. “Diggs again said he wanted to be with his family and that if he went back to Dallas, he’d just be flying right back on the first flight out, especially with players having several days off. The team vehemently denied his request again.”
The missed flight influenced the situation.
“It was one of many factors,” Schottenheimer said via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “It was not the only factor. I’m not the Grinch that stole Christmas. I love Christmas. I love my family. But at the end of the day, we have a protocol that we go through, and the process was not followed.”
Ultimately, Diggs was released on Tuesday, and the Packers acted quickly to add him to their roster.
The addition comes at a crucial time, as the Packers’ defense has struggled this year. Their PFSN Defensive Impact score stands at 74.2 with a grade of C, ranking 18th in the league.
Adding to the surprise, Diggs is only 27 and, per Schultz, healthy. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022, led the league in interceptions in 2021, and was named All-Pro First Team.
Keisean Nixon has started every game for the Packers at corner, but there have been a lot of questions about the position opposite Nixon, which both Carrington Valentine and Nate Hobbs have occupied.
Diggs, the brother of New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who is going through his own issues, has 25 tackles but has not recorded an interception this season. Although he appears healthy now, Diggs has been limited to just eight games this season. He suffered a concussion in an accident at home, and all of that has added to Diggs having a poor season by his standards.
If Diggs can acclimate (very) quickly, his skills as a two-time Pro Bowler and proven ballhawk could significantly strengthen the Packers’ secondary, addressing a key area of need as the team heads into the postseason.
