After falling short in the NFC Championship Game last season, the Los Angeles Rams have done everything in their power to build a powerhouse. Trading for both Trent McDuffie and Myles Garrett, they now have a defense that is just as lethal as their offense.
But their final trump card came right on the eve of the 53-man roster cutdown date, as Aaron Donald announced his return to the NFL. As a result, the NFL gave them a roster exemption, leaving fans bewildered about “preferential treatment.”
Fans Accuse the NFL of Rams Bias After Aaron Donald Decision
Retired for two seasons, speculation was rife about Donald potentially making a comeback this season. After working out with the team, the rumors grew louder before an official decision was announced.
The former Super Bowl champion is back on the roster, but the decision has come with an intense level of scrutiny. For some, the one-year, $20 million deal is too much for a 35-year-old who’s been away from the sport for so long.
Then, the vitriol turned to the NFL for giving a specific exemption to the Rams. Tom Pelissero of The Ringer explained the decision by commissioner Roger Goodell in a tweet.
“The Commissioner has granted a two-game roster exemption for Rams DT Aaron Donald, who was officially reinstated to the active roster today. The roster exemption will expire on Friday, Sept. 11.”

An aggravated San Francisco 49ers fan argued, “Ahhm…why? He’s on the active roster. Why the [expletive] are they getting an exemption? Guess he won’t be playing until September 11th at the earliest, right????”
That would clearly benefit his team as well, with the Niners opening their season against the Rams, who had the 5th-ranked defense last season on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric, in the league’s first game played in Australia.
Others, too, called out the move, exclaiming, “That’s [expletive]. Why the preferential treatment?”

As one fan claimed, “Special treatment is crazzzzzzzy work,” another fan argued that the rules needed to be equal for everybody. “Absolutely ridiculous lol. They want to carry him; they should have to abide by 53 like everyone else.”

One fan believed that the news being all but official for months should have led to a different ruling, claiming, “See this is [expletive] [expletive]. Worst kept secret for months, and they get a freebie roster spot? Cmon now.”
One fan sarcastically asked, “Anyone want to enlighten me as to why the hell the Rams get special treatment?” Brad Lee of the “All AQcess” podcast was confused as well, “Roster EXEMPTION?!? The Rams get to carry an extra player, why?? Am I the only one confused here?”

Tom Levy argued that the situation was unfair to other teams, claiming, “This is absurd. Teams cutting guys they had in camp all summer to make a 53, and the Rams get an exemption during the most crucial time for AD.”
Sam Monson was confused about the decision as well, asking, “Huh? Can anyone explain to me why they get a bonus roster spot for a couple of weeks?” Thankfully, he and the rest of the people aghast at the choice received an answer.

Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap explained, “League rules allow this when a player comes in late, like Donald. Usually doesn’t last long, often just time to get acclimated.”
Monson again questioned, “So specific to guys unretiring late in the process?”
Soon, Fitzgerald further clarified, “More or less. Lions got one for Frank Ragnow last year.”

It remains to be seen how the Rams can take advantage of this exemption, especially with the special circumstances involving their season opener.
With their Week 1 clash taking place in Australia, the team is already planning on limiting their time spent Down Under as much as possible. But the long travel time and unique circumstances could put a strain on their players.
As a result, the additional depth that the roster exemption provides could be invaluable for them.
