The Los Angeles Chargers looked like one of the best teams in football through the first three weeks of the season. But things have gone south for the Chargers of late. They have lost back-to-back games, including one to the New York Giants.
There seem to be plenty of issues with the Chargers, but one glaring one is health, or lack thereof. The most recent injury is to running back Omarion Hampton, who suffered an ankle injury in their Week 5 game and will miss time.
What’s the Latest on Omarion Hampton?
Unfortunately for the Chargers, the ankle injury Hampton suffered against the Commanders will hold him out at least the next four games. This is a significant loss for the Chargers, as Hampton has emerged as a key player over the past few weeks. Since taking over as the unquestioned starter in Week 3, Hampton has rushed 43 times for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He has also caught 17 passes for 122 yards.
According to PFSN, Hampton has an RB Impact Score of 81.3, which ranks him 10th in the NFL in impact. He is showing why he was selected in the first round, and the Chargers will miss his positive effect on offense.
Even though this injury is less than ideal, Hampton has a “good chance” to return after missing four weeks, according to Ian Rapoport.

The Chargers’ injury report also already features Najee Harris, Khalil Mack, Joe Alt, and Rashawn Slater.
Chargers Shifting to RB by Committee
With the loss of Hampton, the Chargers plan to turn the rushing duties over to Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal. Neither of those players will have the same impact as Hampton, so the Chargers may need to adjust their offense slightly.
The Chargers would be wise to put the ball in quarterback Justin Herbert’s hands more while Hampton is out. Over the first two games, Herbert looked like one of the best quarterbacks in football, completing 72.1% of his passes for 560 yards and five touchdowns.
However, in the last three games, he has struggled, throwing for three touchdowns with four interceptions and completing 62.4% of his passes. Keep an eye on what the Chargers choose to do on offense in Week 6. They have a good matchup against the 1-4 Miami Dolphins and should be able to move the ball effectively against that defense.
