Laney Choboy has been one of Nebraska Volleyball’s standout performers this season, playing a big role in the Huskers’ earning their third straight Big Ten title in 2025. In their win against Indiana that clinched the outright conference championship, Choboy demonstrated her impact with five digs.
However, Choboy’s appearance in Nebraska’s black away jersey sparked curiosity among Husker fans as she wore No. 17 instead of her usual No. 6, turning her look on the court into a talking point.
Laney Choboy Reveals The Reason Behind Wearing Different Jersey
Following Nebraska’s 3-0 win against Indiana, Choboy and her teammate Teraya Sigler made a playful TikTok video, where they were seen twinning. The 20-year-old captioned it, “Wore the same outfit so they couldn’t tell us apart.”
Replying to the video, fans were quick to ask Choboy why she wore jersey No. 17 instead of her usual No. 6. The athlete clarified that, since her usual black No. 6 jersey was missing, she had to wear No. 17 instead, saying, “Bro my jersey is just no where to be found so I have to be 17 if I have to wear black.”

So far this season, the former Leesville Road High School student has already set a personal best with 20 digs against Illinois, earning her a Defensive Player of the Week honor. However, she and her teammates remain focused on team goals rather than individual achievements, with their main objective being the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship title.
Last year, Choboy and her team came close to achieving it but were stopped by Penn State, who pulled off a reverse 3-2 sweep to end Nebraska’s title hopes.
Choboy Emphasizes Team Goals Over Individual Libero Role in Push for Championship Run
Laney Choboy opened up about her and her team’s priorities and highlighted that Nebraska’s competitiveness makes it challenging for every player to get consistent playing time. When asked about whether the constantly changing lineup presents a mental challenge, Choboy made it clear that team success came before individual roles.
The Nebraska Volleyball junior stated, “I mean obviously, I think our back row is really, really good, and it doesn’t matter who’s back there. We obviously haven’t lost a set since September 16th, and we’ve been in and out of positions all the time. So I think that it really doesn’t matter who goes back there. We just want to win, and we want to perform well for our team.”
“It’s like our end goal is a natty [National championship], and that’s what we’re working for. We’re not working for, ‘Oh, let me be libero.’ No, we’re working for a national championship and to help our team win,” she added.
Choboy and Olivia Mauch are currently vying for the libero position, with coach Dani Busboom Kelly alternating their playing time across games.
