What Happened to Illinois Wrestling Coach Mike Poeta? All About the Reason for His Indefinite Administrative Leave

What happened to Illinois Wrestling coach Mike Poeta? All about the reason for his indefinite administrative leave.

Illinois wrestling head coach Mike Poeta has been placed on indefinite administrative leave by Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman. The decision stemmed from a potential violation of employment agreements on Poeta’s part, as reported by the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Poeta has served as head coach since 2021 and led the wrestling program to several podiums, besides helping individual athletes achieve success and grow in their careers.

Why Was Illinois Wrestling Head Coach Mike Poeta Placed on Administrative Leave?

Illinois Wrestling head coach has been a loyal Illini for years, even before he joined as head coach in 2021. He served as the assistant coach the years prior and even played with the college program from 2004 to 2008, winning three All-American honors and advancing to the NCAA Finals twice. The two-time Big Ten Champion extended his contract with the program, set to run through 2029.

However, according to recent reports, he is on administrative leave, a temporary status in which an employee does not work or make decisions, usually to allow an investigation to be conducted without interference. In his case, he has come under accusation of violating his employment agreement, and an investigation is underway due to his possible noncompliance with the University’s fiscal control policies.

While he is away, assistant coach Jeremy Hunter will take Poeta’s head coaching position. Hunter has been serving as an assistant coach since 2009, after volunteering since 2001. He had won the NCAA title at 125 pounds in 2000 and earned All-American honors as a student-athlete at Penn State.

Illinois Wrestling Head Coach Poeta’s Success As Head Coach

One of the highlights of Poeta’s career was leading Lucas Byrd to the NCAA Championships and Big Ten gold podiums. Byrd became the 12th wrestler in Illinois history to win both NCAA and Big Ten titles in the same season, earning the program’s 25th individual national title and its first national championship since 2016.

During the 2024–25 season, Poeta helped lead the Illini to a 10th-place finish at the National Tournament, the program’s first such achievement since the 2015–16 season. That same year, he guided seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and led Kannon Webster to a Big Ten runner-up finish, the first time a redshirt freshman from Illinois had achieved the feat in seven years.

Under his tutelage, Edmond Ruth won the Big Ten title at 174 pounds and also earned the All-American status. His and Byrd’s bond has been making strides since his rookie season as head coach. That year, Byrd earned several All-American honors, becoming the 40th Illini in history to attain that level of success.
