Lindsey Vonn, the speed specialist, has been gearing up for the speed events in St. Moritz, scheduled to run from Dec. 12 -14. Mikaela Shiffrin will join her and other US skiers in her first Super-G race since December 2023.
With the Winter Olympics in Cortina looming and seeding underway, the upcoming five Super-G and six downhill events will be crucial in the lead-up. The St. Moritz races will also give the women’s skiers an idea of what their speed tour will look like.
Lindsey Vonn’s season opener: Complete Preview
The speed events, downhill and Super-G, are the most high-risk disciplines in the world, but those didn’t stop Vonn from mastering them with fearlessness and extraordinary courage. She amassed 43 World Cup downhill victories, becoming the most decorated skier of all time in this event. Her win tally of 28 in Super-GÂ is proof that her consistency in the second-fastest event has also been unmatched.
Vonn won Olympic gold in the downhill event at the 2010 Winter Games, becoming the first American woman to do so, and also won bronze in the Super-G event. Her skiing style, ability to handle terrain, and mental toughness also contributed to her winning two World titles in the 2009 edition.
Bringing her flair to the 2024-25 season, the 41-year-old won silver in Super-G finals in Sun Valley, becoming the oldest woman skier to earn a podium at the global level. Now gearing up for her first races of the 2025-26 season, Vonn has lots to prove in the St. Moritz events, building up to the Cortina Olympics.
Vonn’s toughest contender, Mikaela Shiffrin, has established herself as an all-arounder, becoming the first skier, male or female, to win in all the alpine skiing disciplines. Though a technical specialist, the 30-year-old has proven her versatility by winning her first World Cup in Super-G in 2018, the same season she claimed the Super-G crystal globe. In downhill, she won four World Cup golds, the latest in 2023.

The 104-time World Cup winner will take the Super-G slopes for the first time since 2023, coming off her straight Slalom wins in Levi, Gurgl, and Copper Mountain. She stumbled in the Giant Slalom, a result of past injury trauma that sat her out for weeks in the 2024-25 season.
