Former Nebraska Volleyball legend Lexi Rodriguez opened up about her decision to commit to the Big Red team after just one camp session. The 22-year-old volleyball player represented the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 2021 to 2024, during which she led the Huskers twice to the finals of the NCAA Championships.
During the interview, Rodriguez shared her thoughts on the summer camp she attended and how it influenced her by the legacy of the Big Red team. Rodriguez also mentioned that Nebraska was always amongst her top three destinations, since she wanted to play in the Big Ten Conference.
Former Nebraska Volleyball Player Rodriguez Opens Up About Commitment
The Instagram page of Hurrdat Sports uploaded some clips of their latest interview with Rodriguez. The 22-year-old volleyball player, who currently represents the LOVB Omaha team in the LOVB Pro, opened up about the summer camp she was invited to. She mentioned,
“So I was in eighth grade, and they came to one of my practices up in, I played for a club called Sports Performance, and they came to one of our practices and then, a couple of weeks later, my coach pulled me and one or two people aside and were like, ‘You got invited to the Nebraska Volleyball camp this summer.'”
She added, “I was like, Oh my God, Biggest news ever, immediately called my mom, and then obviously my club season ended, and then I’m going into my freshman year, and I go to the camp that summer, and I’m just like okay., I’m just gonna leave it all on the court.”
Rodriguez initially attended Sterling High School before she joined the Huskers through a scholarship athlete program. She had already led the US U19 team to a gold medal in the 2019 FIVB U19 World Championships held in Egypt.
Rodriguez Elaborates On First Nebraska Volleyball Tour
In another clip shared on Instagram, Rodriguez elaborated on what impressed her about the Big Red team. The 22-year-old volleyball player described,
“Then, at the end of the three-day camp, they offered me a scholarship. So that was the end of it. That was the first and last, and luckily for me, it worked out; I don’t regret it.
“Yeah, I always knew I wanted to play in the Big Ten, I just I watched it, my mom always watched it, and it was just the place to be for volleyball, and so when I was there, it was already one of my top three schools, and then being around the facilities and just, you hear all their talk about tradition and culture and everything, they show you all their trophies, and the All Americans.”
Rodriguez achieved multiple laurels for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, including two consecutive Big Ten Conference titles in 2023 and 2024. She had also led the Huskers to the finals of the NCAA Championships in her debut season [i.e., 2021].
Her final year ended on a bittersweet note as the Huskers lost a chance to qualify for a second consecutive finals at the NCAA Championships, falling 2-3 to the eventual NCAA champions, the Penn State Nittany Lions.
