Jay Clark acknowledged that LSU Gymnastics needed a response after its SEC Championship setback, and the team delivered at regionals. He pointed to the performance as a timely lift, saying it helped reset the group mentally.
The LSU head coach stressed how important it was to see routines come together under pressure and for athletes to trust their preparation again.
Jay Clark Praises LSU Gymnastics’ Response at NCAA Regionals
Clark spoke to the media after LSU delivered a huge performance in the second round of the NCAA Regionals, putting up a massive 198.375 against Clemson, Nebraska, and Auburn. The score not only secured first place in the session but also marked a program record on the regional stage.
Coming off a disappointing outing at the SEC Championships, the response felt timely. Clark focused less on the number and more on how his team showed up across every rotation. He pointed out that this was the kind of performance LSU needed at this stage, especially with the pressure building and bigger rounds still ahead.
Reflecting on how his team handled the moment and delivered across all rotations, Clark did not hold back when describing just how much the performance surprised him.
“That exceeded even my own expectations,” he said.
Looking at how his athletes rose to the occasion when it mattered most, Clark pointed to the sharp execution and composure shown throughout the meet, noting that such performances are crucial late in the season when belief and rhythm can shape what comes next.

The level of gymnastics, I’m not talking about the score, I don’t care about scores. I’m talking about the level of performance that we had one through six on every event,” he added.
