Gabby Thomas has long established herself as one of the most compelling track and field athletes. A multiple-time global medalist and Olympic champion, the American star has built a reputation not just for her blistering speed in the 200 meters but for her intelligence, poise, and consistency on the biggest stages.
Dealing with an Achilles issue, Thomas made the difficult decision to step away and withdraw from the World Championships rather than risk long-term damage. It was a heartbreaking moment for an athlete who thrives on competition. However, instead of letting the setback define her, Thomas has chosen to reframe the moment.
Gabby Thomas Speaks Out on Return Following Emotional World Championships Withdrawal
Rather than dwelling on disappointment, Gabby Thomas is clear-eyed and optimistic about her decision and her road back. Speaking candidly about her plans, she emphasized that the withdrawal was about protecting her future, not pressing pause on her ambitions.
“I’ll be back. I’ll have a little bit of a later start next season, which gives me more time to rehab my Achilles,” she told Olympics.com.
“But I’ll be doing a normal season, focusing on Athlos towards the end of it and the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, which is a new initiative by World Athletics that I love. So I’m excited to be part of these new and innovative things in our sport,” she added.

The Olympic 200m champion suffered an Achilles injury and will miss the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The World Championships would have been a chance for Thomas to win her first individual gold. However, she will be absent when the competition kicks off in Tokyo in September.
Notably, Thomas won gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays at the 2024 Olympics. She also placed second in Budapest in the half-lap event two years ago.
Gabby Thomas Reveals Secret Ingredient Behind Her Success
Thomas’ definition of success was on full display during a conversation with tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams. While discussing her rise in track and field, the Williams sisters asked the Olympic champion what she considered to be her secret ingredient.
Thomas paused for a moment before saying, “Probably my grit. I’m just a very gritty athlete.”
The answer surprised both Serena and Venus, who acknowledged that Thomas doesn’t particularly look “gritty.” Thomas agreed that most people tend to underestimate her grit, which is why she describes it as her secret weapon.
