Fred Kerley, never one to shy away from the spotlight, recently made waves by announcing his involvement in the much-debated Enhanced Games. This unconventional event invites athletes to compete without the usual outside anti‑doping rules and standard testing, drawing big names like Ben Proud and Megan Romano into its orbit.
Kerley revealed his intention to join the tournament this September, a bold move that followed his suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit for failing to submit his whereabouts.
What Message Did Fred Kerley Send Regarding His Status As An Athlete?
Kerley has had a highly decorated career, winning multiple Olympic medals and gold medals at the World Athletics Championships. The American made his breakthrough at Texas A&M in 2017, winning various NCAA titles and eventually representing Team USA at the World Championships. However, he has faced issues outside of his performances on the track, with his suspension being the latest one.
In a message shared on Instagram, Kerley highlighted his journey and how much it had taken for him to reach his current point, also adding that he had not been paying attention to the criticism he had been receiving at the moment.
“I came from nothing and turned it into a story the world gotta respect. A walk-on who turned into a global problem.” Kerley wrote.
Kerley and his legal team appealed the decision to provisionally suspend him, arguing that the missed tests should be dismissed either because Kerley was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not take reasonable steps to locate him at his reported whereabouts. With no movement on the matter, his decision to compete at the Enhanced Games comes as no surprise.
Kerley On How Track Saved His Life
Kerley has spoken openly about his challenging upbringing, including his father’s imprisonment and his mother’s difficulties. He and his siblings were adopted by their aunt, Virginia, and lived together in a small one-bedroom home. Kerley eventually turned to track as a way of escape.
“Me signing that contract saved my life, and when I say that it saved my life, it gave my kids the opportunity to get out of the streets too. The best thing I did was sign that contract and leave the state of Texas.” he said, as per Olympics.com.
Kerley inked his first pro deal with Nike in 2017, later switching to Asics in 2023 with a multi-year contract. Now, as he steps into the Enhanced Games spotlight, the world wonders if he will ever return to the professional track circuit.
