Odell Beckham Jr.’s NFL career now spans 11 years, more than a decade since the player who shocked the league with a reception that became part of football history. It came in 2014 during a game for the New York Giants against the Dallas Cowboys in his rookie year.
On August 12, 2025, rumors surfaced on social media about Beckham’s retirement from the NFL. This comes as the star receiver tries to overcome injuries that hindered his prime. However, he sent a strong message after the rumor went viral.
Odell Beckham Jr. Shuts Down NFL Retirement Rumors
The decision to retire as a professional athlete is one of the most difficult a player can make in life. After all, the sport has been part of who they are for their entire life, and walking away from it can take a long time before it truly becomes final. For someone who was once one of the biggest stars in the league, that choice can be even harder.

Beckham has not been a star for quite some time, dating back to when he left the Cleveland Browns to join the Los Angeles Rams as a complementary piece rather than the team’s primary target. After his injuries, regaining any kind of leading role became impossible, and he spent his last two seasons as merely a depth option.
An account on X (formerly known as Twitter) that was trying to imitate NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the player had retired from the NFL, but Beckham immediately shut down the rumors, saying he did not know the source who gave that information to the insider. He wrote on X: “LOL WTF… when was that announced and by who? That’s funny, appreciate the concerns but this Shxt ain’t over yet.”

Schefter had previously announced a retirement before it actually happened, something that infuriated Tom Brady and his camp at the time. Brady eventually returned to play a month after deciding to retire, a situation that did not reflect well on Schefter. However, this time it was not the ESPN insider, yet the fake account managed to fool many people, as the post had 42 thousand likes and 1.7 million impressions at the time of writing.
Beckham followed up with another post on X, making it clear he is not done yet: “Not done yet… thanks for hr concerns and have a blessed day,” said the wide receiver, who is currently a free agent.

Unlike the natural career arc most players follow, Beckham entered the league already at his peak. In his first season, he won Rookie of the Year honors, recording 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. He followed that with two more seasons surpassing 1,300 yards, his best year coming in 2015 with 1,450 yards and 13 touchdowns.
However, from 2017 onward, Beckham’s career was never the same. Battling injuries every season, he became more of a complementary piece than a star, playing for four different teams between 2021 and 2024.
He played a key role in the Rams’ Super Bowl win in 2021, scoring the team’s first touchdown in the big game, but tore his ACL during that matchup, which caused him to miss the entire 2022 season.
At 32 years old, he is looking for one last opportunity to end his career on a high note. And according to the player himself, retirement is not in his plans at the moment.
