Deshaun Watson’s comments after the Cleveland Browns’ 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills have added another layer to the team’s ongoing quarterback drama.
Watson was met with loud boos when he entered the game in the second half after Shedeur Sanders started the contest. Afterward, Watson called the reaction “disrespectful” and “personal,” prompting an immediate response from NFL fans.
Deshaun Watson Draws Fan Backlash
The boos rang out as soon as Watson’s name was announced at the beginning of the second half. Speaking after the game, Watson said he believes the reaction went beyond his on-field performance.
“I think the whole world knows it has nothing to do about the performance,” Watson said after Saturday’s preseason action. “It’s a little bit more personal than that. So, I think that’s a disrespectful thing.”
Watson also referenced his previous injury (from back in 2024) in Cleveland, adding, “Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles. That same fanbase, they cheered when I got hurt.”
His comments quickly spread across social media, with fans largely pushing back against the quarterback’s perspective.

Joey Knish questioned why Watson remains with the Browns at all: “Why the [expletive] is this guy even on the team? The Browns want to lose and draft a QB. The fanbase HATES Watson. There’s a 0% chance anybody trades for him. Just send his [expletive] home.”

Kev focused on what he viewed as Watson portraying himself as the victim. “This guy playing the victim card is wild for 100 reasons.” A co-host at Fox Sports Radio even suggested the Browns should consider moving on immediately: “Send him to the NY Jets and get this [expletive] over with before it gets ugly.”
Analyst Jared Monroe offered one of the harshest assessments of Watson’s situation in Cleveland: “No pity from me. You can either be a bad person or bad at your job. You can’t be both. Deshaun’s wasted guaranteed bag set the Browns back more than a decade.”
NFL writer Brian Drake was similarly critical, arguing that Watson’s relationship with the fanbase may be beyond repair: “Browns owe Deshaun Watson $46M guaranteed. But it’s over. The fans will never accept him after his scumbag actions. Make him inactive every week, then move on. He’ll likely never play another down in the NFL.”

Sanders-Watson Battle Adds to Drama
The reaction comes as Cleveland continues to evaluate Watson and second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders started the second preseason matchup and immediately provided a spark. He completed his first eight passes and capped Cleveland’s opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Luke Floriea.
Watson struggled after taking over in the second half. He completed 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and threw an interception as Cleveland’s offense failed to find any rhythm.
With head coach Todd Monken yet to announce a Week 1 starter ahead of the Browns’ opener against Jacksonville, the game against Buffalo only added to the debate.
For Cleveland, the decision now involves more than simply comparing two quarterbacks. Sanders has energized the fanbase, while Watson is facing increasing frustration from supporters who have already made their feelings clear.
The Browns will ultimately have to decide whether Watson’s experience and contract situation outweigh Sanders’ momentum and growing support in Cleveland.
