The Oilers’ goaltending woes and penalty problems were endless during the Stanley Cup finals. However, they were also noticeably disadvantaged because a key player was absent from the ice during the crucial postseason games. As the team gears up to appear again, fans will be disappointed that the veteran winger will not be around for the team’s home opener.
When will Zach Hyman Return to Play with the Edmonton Oilers?
Following his collision with the Dallas Stars’ Mason Marchment during Game 4 of the Western Conference Final, Zach Hyman sustained a wrist injury that he is still recovering from. The injury compelled him to stay off the ice for the remainder of the postseason.
“The 33-year-old forward was having an impact physically, finishing with a playoff-leading 111 hits, and had 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 15 games, skating on Edmonton’s top line and No. 1 power-play unit. His absence was noticeable in a physical series against the Panthers and his net-front presence sorely missed,” wrote Derek Van Diest for the NHL, following the Oilers’ loss in the finals.
On a seven-year, $38.5 million contract with the Edmonton outfit, Hyman is an indelible element of the team. So, when is he expected to return? As coach Knoblauch stated in a recent media availability, certainly not at the team’s home opener. The veteran winger is expected to return around November. ” Yeah, so Zach will be, unfortunately, won’t be able to join us for our home opener. We’re thinking, you know, guideline probably around November 1, so maybe a little bit earlier, maybe a little bit later, but around that timeline.”

The men in blue and orange will face the Calgary Flames on October 8 at Rogers Place. Knoblauch also added that, given Hyman’s mammoth role, his absence will also bring along opportunities for other players, new and old, to prove their mettle.
“So this creates opportunity. I mean, obviously, we know he plays a significant role, special teams, and such. Opportunity may be knocking for some guys that are some new guys here and some existing guys. Well, absolutely. You know, Zach Hyman plays, you know, a significant role on our team, plays about 20 minutes a night. So that’s some opportunities for other guys to step up, and maybe who that is, we’ll find out.”
Hyman may be away from the ice, but his consistent support for the team from the sidelines is guaranteed. Despite adverse circumstances, the 33-year-old has been able to train his lower body during the offseason: another testament to Hyman’s unwavering grit and determination.
