‘Don’t Trade Him’ — NHL World Reacts to Minnesota Wild’s Eyebrow-Raising Offer For Robert Thomas Trade

The Minnesota Wild saw their playoff run come to an end after a five-game second-round loss to the Colorado Avalanche, and attention has now quickly shifted toward what could be an aggressive offseason for the organization.

One reported trade proposal, in particular, has already sparked major discussion across the hockey world.

Minnesota Wild’s Offer For Robert Thomas Turns Heads

According to NHL insider Michael Russo, the Wild reportedly offered Jesper Wallstedt and Danila Yurov to the St. Louis Blues for Robert Thomas before the trade deadline. While the Blues declined the offer, Russo noted that Minnesota is expected to revisit the possibility again this offseason.

The rumored package immediately drew attention around the league for its value. Wallstedt is widely viewed as one of hockey’s top young goaltenders after posting a .916 save percentage during an impressive 35-game rookie campaign, while Yurov recently completed his first full season with 27 points and continues to be projected as a potential top-six forward at the NHL level.

The report quickly triggered strong reactions from fans and analysts.

Hockey account Avalanche Forever pushed back hard against the idea of moving Wallstedt, posting, “Trading Wallstedt is the exact opposite of what Minnesota needs to do. Kid is going to be incredible for years to come. Don’t trade him.”

Meanwhile, Overtime Hockey Talk noted that Minnesota’s interest makes sense given the team’s need for a true top-line center, but also suggested other teams could enter the mix for Thomas. The account wrote, “No surprise here… Wall’s stock is climbing and the Wild need a top line center bad, but expect a few other teams to target Thomas… Detroit and Toronto will be players.”

Host of the Expected Buffalo Podcast Chad DeDominicis questioned whether Thomas was ever truly available at the deadline, saying, “I know everyone has different opinions on players but every legit leaked offer I see for Thomas, none were better than what the Sabres had in play. Which is why I think he wasn’t really available at the deadline and have doubts about this summer being an option.”

NHL analyst Thomas Welch also joked about the situation, posting a cartoon depicting the trade discussions as someone trying to buy something expensive with only a few dollars.

Minnesota’s interest in Thomas is understandable. After acquiring Quinn Hughes earlier this season, the Wild clearly see themselves in a win-now window. However, moving Marco Rossi in that blockbuster left the roster thin down the middle, making Thomas an ideal long-term fit as a top-line playmaking center.

There’s also another interesting layer to the speculation: Thomas and Hughes are known to be close friends, fueling even more talk about the Wild trying to build a core around Hughes, Thomas, and Kirill Kaprizov.

For now, it remains to be seen whether Minnesota revisits the same offer this summer, but one thing is clear: the Wild appear willing to make bold moves to chase a Stanley Cup.
