‘That’s Connor McDavid Money’ – NHL Fans Have Their Say As Jets Splash $96 Million on Kyle Connor

NHL fans have diverse opinions about the Winnipeg Jets handing historic contract extension to franchise cornerstone, Kyle Connor

When Kirill Kaprizov signed the biggest-ever contract with the Minnesota Wild, fans everywhere were convinced that Connor McDavid, who was still engaged in relentless contract talks with the Edmonton Oilers, would perhaps want an even bigger contract. Surprisingly, the Oilers captain signed a two-year contract to stay in Edmonton, and his average annual value will remain the same at $12.5 million.

Now, focusing our attention on the Central Division of the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets have handed Kyle Connor an eight-year, $96 million contract extension: the biggest in franchise history. A contract as big as this has sparked many conversations, and social media users soon flooded the comment section with their opinions.

How do NHL Fans Feel About Winnipeg Jets’ Kyle Connor Splurge?

Connor is the face of the Jets for a reason. The forward led the team in points last season, accumulating 97 points in 82 regular-season games. His playoff performance was just as impressive: the 28-year-old gathered 17 points in 13 postseason games. It goes without saying that the Jets would want to retain their key player, even if he comes at a high price.

“I expect the Wpg Jets will officially announce the Kyle Connor extension. 8 years $12 million AAV,” posted Darren Dreger on his X handle. Frank Seravalli added that the deal is unprecedented in the franchise’s history: “It’s the richest deal in franchise history – by nearly $37 million. For context, 14 years ago the entire Jets franchise was purchased in Atlanta for $110 million.”

Comparisons with McDavid followed readily. “McDavid is the vastly superior player making only 0.5M more lmfao,” one social media user stated. Another NHL fan echoed their opinion, insinuating that the Jets highly overpaid for Connor’s contract extension. “Thats Connor McDavid money.”

A third social media user bluntly compared Connor and Kaprizov. Despite Kaprizov’s mammoth deal with the Wild, they opined that the Jets forward is a superior player. “Connor > kaprizov.”

Notwithstanding the naysayers, a few other voices believed Connor’s contract was a sufficiently good deal given the rising cap. “Damn good contract considering the rising cap,” commented one. Yet another expressed a similar opinion, “Decent price with the cap going up.”

Even though social media is abuzz with endless chatter about the forward’s contract extension to stay in Winnipeg, Jets fans can rejoice that the team’s cornerstone is secured for the near future.
