The NHL’s free agency window brought a wave of blockbuster signings and reshaped rosters across the league. Still, for the Washington Capitals, the big splash they were hoping for never materialized.
Despite strong efforts behind the scenes, general manager Chris Patrick admitted that Washington’s pursuit of top-tier talent this offseason ultimately fell short, including a failed attempt to lure a star player away from a rival.
Washington Capitals’ GM Opens Up on Free Agency Misses After Failing To Land $51M Star
The Capitals, fresh off a strong 51-win regular season in 2024–25, were in the market to upgrade their offensive core. After a second-round playoff exit to the Carolina Hurricanes, highlighted by an especially frustrating 4-0 shutout loss, it was clear that reinforcements were needed up front, even with Alex Ovechkin still leading the NHL in goals.
According to Patrick, one of the team’s primary targets was forward Nikolaj Ehlers, a dynamic 29-year-old winger who ultimately chose to sign a sizable deal with Carolina. His new contract reportedly came in at $51 million, a price the Capitals were prepared to match or come close to.
However, Ehlers opted for the Hurricanes, leaving Washington on the outside looking in. Patrick hinted at missing out on Ehlers, saying the failed deal wasn’t about money or term, but the player choosing the best overall fit for himself, on and off the ice.
“Some big names… would have been interesting… (but) they stayed with their current teams,” Patrick said candidly during his media availability. “It didn’t come down to the money or the offer or the term or any of that. It was a player picking what he thought was the best situation, both on and off the ice. Totally respect a guy taking his time to make the right decision for himself.”
Patrick didn’t name names but when asked about the big swing that didn’t work out (ahem, Elhers), he said: “It didn’t come down to the money or the offer or the term or any of that. It was a player picking what he thought was the best situation both on and off the ice. Totally…

Though disappointed, Patrick also noted that the team had taken care of several key moves earlier in the year, re-signing important pieces like Jakob Chychrun, Nic Dowd, Logan Thompson, and Charlie Lindgren. The return of Anthony Beauvillier was also described as “huge for our group.”
Still, with roughly $5 million in cap space remaining and a clear need for more scoring depth, the Capitals are not done.
“We looked to try and do something big, and it didn’t go our way,” Patrick admitted. “But I’m excited we did a lot of our free agency work during the season… Now, we’ll explore some trade options.”
Washington remains in win-now mode and isn’t backing away from bold moves. While they may have missed out on a top-tier winger like Ehlers, their offseason plan is far from over.
