Alex Ovechkin has already secured his place among hockey’s greatest, but questions about his future followed him throughout the summer after the Washington Capitals missed the playoffs.
The uncertainty surrounding his next move fueled speculation that the NHL’s all-time leading regular-season goal scorer could finally be nearing the end of his remarkable career.
Instead, the veteran captain decided to continue for another year and has now offered a rare look into the thought process behind one of the biggest decisions of his career.
Alex Ovechkin Reveals Why He Chose Not to Retire
Speaking on the Empty Netters podcast, Ovechkin admitted that returning for a 22nd NHL season was not an automatic decision. He signed a one-year contract extension with the Capitals, but acknowledged that the process was far from straightforward.
“It feels great. Obviously, it was a hard summer because I didn’t know what I was going to sign or what was going to happen. But yeah, it’s kind of a relief, and I’m happy. My family is happy, the fans are happy, and the organization is happy. So I can’t wait for the season to start, and I can’t wait to get back and play hockey,” Ovechkin said.
The new deal keeps Ovechkin with the Capitals for the 2026-27 season and extends a career that has already produced 929 regular-season goals, more than any player in NHL history. It also gives him another opportunity to continue chasing Wayne Gretzky’s combined regular-season and playoff goals record of 1,016.
Ovechkin also acknowledged that Washington’s failure to qualify for the playoffs played a role in his decision-making. Rather than ending his career after an early offseason, he wanted another opportunity to compete for the Stanley Cup.
“When you play 82 games, you want to be in the playoffs because you prepare yourself, your mind, and your body for a Stanley Cup run. Of course, it sucks when you don’t make the playoffs. It sucks for everybody, for the fans, and for my teammates. The additions we made, I hope, are going to help us get into a playoff position, and we’ll see what’s going to happen,” he said.
When asked how close he came to retiring, Ovechkin revealed that the Capitals’ offseason plans ultimately made the choice much easier.
“To be honest with you, I was thinking, ‘Okay, well, let’s see what’s going to happen with the team.’ I was talking to the general manager, and I was talking to the coaching staff. It was kind of an easy decision for me when I saw what was happening with the team,” Ovechkin explained.
“Like I said, I’m pretty happy with what’s happening with the team. Obviously, it’s tough to see the guys leaving because we have great relationships, but it’s a business, and it’s life. So yeah, I’m looking forward to it.”

Washington’s aggressive roster moves, including adding Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch, clearly helped shape Ovechkin’s outlook.
Combined with his incentive-heavy one-year contract, the organization has positioned its longtime captain for another meaningful run while keeping its championship aspirations intact.
