‘Crazier Things Have Happened’ – Insider Delivers Update on Maple Leafs’ $27,300,000 Trade Target

Insider updates on Maple Leafs’ $27.3M trade target as Toronto looks to strengthen its roster and find stability midseason.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season is hovering around mediocrity with more losses than wins, which has failed to build momentum. The roster has seen tweaks, but the overall picture remains unsettled, and as the team enters Festivus, the midseason timing forces reflection for both management and fans. The decisions made now will carry significant consequences for the remainder of the year.

That uncertainty has put a spotlight on potential roster moves, with league insiders consistently linking Toronto to high-profile names ahead of the trade freeze.

Insider Shares New Update on Maple Leafs’ $27.3 Million Trade Target

Toronto approaches this stretch holding a 15-15-5 record, navigating a season where opportunities slip away in close games, and consistency has been elusive. The power play ranks last in the NHL, leaving Toronto unable to capitalize in key moments, while defensive lapses have turned winnable contests into setbacks. Despite a strong penalty kill, protecting leads and maintaining rhythm remain challenges.

Management has sought to address these issues through a series of calculated roster moves. The most significant development occurred on July 1, when Mitch Marner was traded to Vegas in exchange for Nicolas Roy, signaling a shift in both the salary structure and lineup priorities.

Dakota Joshua joined from Vancouver shortly after, adding size and experience. In October and November, the Maple Leafs made waiver claims, such as Troy Stecher and Cayden Primeau, to navigate injury-related absences. December focused on internal recalls and assignments, stressing stability over dramatic changes.

Amid these adjustments, Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has emerged as a potential target. Andersson, signed to a six-year, $27.3 million contract with a $4.55 million cap hit, is in the final season of his deal as a cornerstone of Calgary’s blue line.

On a recent episode of The Johnston Show, insider Chris Johnston noted that Calgary’s decisions following the trade freeze will heavily influence Andersson’s future.

“I think certainly Calgary as a team, when we get back on the other side of the freeze, there’s gonna be more focus on whether it’s him or Blake Coleman, Nazem Kadri, all the guys on the board,” Johnston said. “Did they reset it by moving those players, or, you know, could they even extend Rasmus Andersson? I mean, crazier things have happened.”

He added that Andersson appeared open to staying put, noting, “He seemed to leave the door open to staying in Calgary. That was my read. But we’ll see if he and the organization can find anything close to the same vision on what he should be paid.”

Andersson himself spoke about the speculation on Dec. 21 during an After Hours appearance, keeping his comments measured. “It’s a trade freeze right now, so I can breathe easy,” he said. “Honestly, what is there to say, really? We all know my contract situation. Nothing has changed from the summer until now.”

On the ice, Andersson continues to justify the interest. At 29, he plays heavy minutes in all situations, contributes on the power play, and remains trusted late in games. His production and reliable presence reflect why teams like Toronto would see him as a stabilizing option on the back end rather than a short-term patch.
