The Ottawa Senators entered the offseason facing more questions than answers after another disappointing playoff exit, and in the middle of all the hullabaloo, much of the attention has quickly shifted toward captain Brady Tkachuk.
With trade speculation continuing to build around the star forward, former Senators executive Pierre McGuire has now made his opinion on the situation crystal clear.
Brady Tkachuk Situation Draws Strong Reaction From Ex-Sens Exec
Brady Tkachuk endured a topsy-turvy season after missing two months following thumb surgery in October 2025. He returned to the lineup as soon as he could, but he rarely looked like the dominant force the Ottawa Senators are used to seeing.
He also carried a heavy workload for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics, helping win gold, but the grind of the extra games seemed to wear him down as the NHL season went on.
Despite a strong late-season push that helped Ottawa secure a wild-card spot, the Senators were swept by Carolina in the opening round. Tkachuk finished the series without a point and posted a minus-4 rating, which only intensified the growing trade speculation surrounding him.
Some around the league have even wondered whether Tkachuk could eventually leave Ottawa, even if he remains with the club next season.
Former Senators executive Pierre McGuire, who served as Ottawa’s Senior Vice President of Player Development from 2021 to 2022, recently shared his thoughts on the situation.
“When did the league become a place where you had to convince players that, well, this is what we’re going to do, so please stay,” McGuire said. “We’re begging you to stay. I can tell you right now, I coached players that are a lot better than Brady Tkachuk, and we don’t have to sit down and tell them please stay. This is what our plan is. You know what I mean? I mean, some of this has gotten out of control.”
In McGuire’s view, the growing trend of publicly discussing a player’s future and trying to align organizational plans around it has become excessive.
For his part, Tkachuk has repeatedly tried to shut down the rumors. “Quite honestly, it’s just getting frustrating. It’s becoming a distraction. I have been fully committed to this team, to this city, and (the talk), it’s just become a distraction. Frustrating to deal with,” Tkachuk said at locker room cleanout.
The Senators now head into a pivotal offseason with major questions surrounding the future of their core group.
