‘It’s Unfortunate’ — Sidney Crosby Makes His Peace With Penguins’ Exit From 2026 NHL Playoffs

Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins saw their season end after pushing a difficult series to the edge. A slow start forced them into a chase that nearly turned historic, but when push came to shove, it all fell apart. Their final game showed effort and control, yet the result did not match the perfection with which they played.

This contrast now shapes the mood inside the room, leading to a more measured reflection from Crosby. Following a 98-point regular season, the Penguins’ captain acknowledged the sting of defeat while still taking pride in the group’s late push.

Sidney Crosby Addresses Penguins Exit While Backing Group’s Fight and Future

Crosby spoke with a calm tone after the loss, balancing disappointment with his usual approach following the team’s first-round exit. Pittsburgh fell 1-0 in overtime in Game 6 against Philadelphia, closing a series that shifted after the Penguins dropped the first three games. The late push gave them a path back, but it fell just short despite strong pressure in the deciding moments.

Crosby pointed to missed chances as the key difference in the final game. He said the group created enough looks, especially late and in overtime, but could not convert when it mattered most.

It’s unfortunate,” he said. “I thought, especially the second half of that game, overtime, we had some really good looks. We’re a shot away from going back to Pittsburgh for Game 7. So it just comes down to bounces sometimes, but putting yourself in that position is tough.

“I think we all had a lot of belief that we could dig ourselves out of it, and I think our game showed that. Just unfortunate that we got behind early in the series.”

The Penguins showed resilience after the early 3-0 deficit, winning two straight games to extend the matchup. Crosby highlighted that response as part of the team’s identity throughout the season. He said the group handled adversity well and “were right there.”

Goaltending played a major role in keeping Pittsburgh alive deep into Game 6. Crosby credited Artūrs Šilovs for giving the team a chance in a high-pressure situation.

“He was great,” Crosby said. “In this circumstance they’re going to push hard and we’re going to have to rely on him, so he made some big saves. Kept us in it. It was kind of trading momentum there going on.”

At the same time, the Penguins ran into a strong performance from the opposing side. Philadelphia’s goaltender, Dan Vladar, stopped 42 shots in the clinching game, turning aside heavy pressure as Pittsburgh pushed late. The Penguins generated chances but could not find the finish, which ultimately decided the outcome.

The loss also brings attention to the future of the core group. Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang have been together for two decades, building a long run of success that includes three championships. Crosby described that connection in simple terms, calling them “like family” and expressing appreciation for the years they have shared on the ice.

While the disappointment remains fresh, Crosby suggested there will be time to evaluate the season more fully. For now, the focus stays on how close they came and what it took to get there, even if the final step did not follow.
