The NHL offseason routinely breeds wild speculation, but a viral “insider report” linking Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid to the Toronto Maple Leafs set a new standard for absurdity.
Rather than sparking panic in Edmonton or genuine excitement in Toronto, the rumor was immediately dismantled, mocked, and laughed off by hockey fans on social media.
Latest Connor McDavid-Maple Leafs Rumor Roundly Dismissed
The rumor started when an account on X called “Hockeyy Insiderr” shared what it described as breaking news regarding McDavid’s future. The post claimed that the Oilers captain, who is entering the first season of his two-year, $25 million extension, intends to sign with the Maple Leafs when his contract expires following the 2027-28 season, unless Edmonton trades him to Toronto first.
The account claimed the information came from a “source very close to the player” and went further, insisting that McDavid had no interest in any other team and wanted to finish his career in Toronto.
With no support from any well-known reporters or trusted insiders, fans quickly questioned the report’s credibility, and many simply laughed it off.
Bleed Oil Blue sarcastically suggested that Toronto wasn’t exactly an ideal destination for the Oilers captain, writing: “Traded… to a rebuild, please.” The World Hockey Report account also joined in on the fun, posting: “‘It’s fun to play here, it’s always fun to leave here as well,’ McDavid on Toronto.”
NHL analyst Austin was far less amused and directly criticized the account behind the rumor, saying: “Accounts like this are [expletive] pathetic. That long-term extension he signs with Edmonton in July 2027 is going to make [expletive] like you look even more stupid than you already are.”
Puckin Around Podcast member Karman Gill echoed the frustration felt by many fans and analysts around the league: “You know it’s a slow sports day when this lying tool pulls this out.”
Meanwhile, DTomko perhaps delivered the most memorable response of the bunch: “Dude’s sleep paralysis demon gave him some hot info.”
Rather than celebrating the possibility of McDavid heading home to Ontario, most fans simply treated the story as another baseless offseason rumor.
Why Fans Aren’t Buying It
Aside from the complete lack of credible reporting, there are several reasons why the rumor never gained any traction.
The Oilers remain one of the league’s top contenders and are still firmly in their championship window with McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way. Walking away from a team built to win would be difficult to justify on competitive grounds.
McDavid and his wife, Lauren Kyle, have also built strong personal and business ties to Edmonton over the years, making the city much more than simply his workplace.
Even if McDavid eventually reaches free agency, many fans believe the deciding factor will be the Oilers’ ability to continue competing for championships rather than his childhood connection to Toronto.
Until respected insiders report otherwise, most fans appear content to treat this latest rumor as little more than another social media fantasy.
