Maple Leafs Target, Calgary Center Nazem Kadri, Confronts Trade Speculation Head-On

Nazem Kadri addresses trade rumors linking him to Toronto, calling them “bizarre,” as insiders confirm Calgary has no plans to move on from him.

Nazem Kadri’s name keeps popping up in trade rumors, and the Calgary Flames center isn’t staying quiet about it. The speculation has him potentially returning to Toronto, where he spent nearly a decade building his NHL career. But is there any real substance behind the chatter, or is this just another case of the rumor mill working overtime?

Kadri finally addressed the situation head-on, while NHL insiders stepped in to separate fact from fiction. Here’s what’s actually happening with one of the league’s most talked-about players.

What Did Nazem Kadri Actually Say About the Toronto Trade Rumors?

Speaking on the “Knight Shift” podcast, Kadri called the recent trade rumors “a little bit bizarre,” saying he’s been surprised to see his name and face repeatedly surface online.

“It’s happened quite often over the last couple months,” Kadri said. “It’s a little bit bizarre scrolling around and seeing your face pop up and your name pop up. Obviously, the rumour mill is pretty strong, especially around these parts.”

The speculation stems largely from Kadri’s deep history with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he played the first 561 games of his NHL career. Over that stretch, he tallied 357 points, including 161 goals, and built a strong connection with the Toronto fan base.

However, Kadri clarified there’s no actual movement behind the scenes. He holds a full no-movement clause and hasn’t publicly requested a trade out of Calgary. Any potential move would require his approval.

Despite the lack of concrete developments, Kadri admitted the speculation isn’t entirely unwelcome. “There’s not a whole lot in terms of sports right now,” he said. “I think it’s definitely a topic to talk about. Why not talk about it?”

Why Are the Flames Unlikely to Trade Kadri Right Now?

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman provided some much-needed clarity to the situation, shutting down some of the more far-fetched reports surrounding Kadri. He specifically denied that Kadri had made any statements pushing for a move to Toronto, calling those quotes fabricated.

“They’re not in a hurry to trade Nazem Kadri right now,” Friedman said. “Not after he had such a fantastic season for them.”

The numbers back up Friedman’s assessment. Kadri is coming off one of his strongest seasons in recent years. In 2023-24, he scored 35 goals and recorded 67 points in 82 games, a performance that reaffirmed his value as a top-six center.

From a financial standpoint, Kadri still has four years remaining on a seven-year, $49 million contract, carrying a $7 million annual cap hit. For the Flames, that makes him both a key roster piece and a significant financial commitment.

Calgary’s perspective makes sense when you consider their current situation. Kadri is producing at a high level, is under contract long-term, and brings veteran leadership to a team trying to find its way back into playoff contention.

Unless something changes drastically, whether it’s Kadri requesting a move or Calgary shifting its direction, he appears set to remain with the Flames for now.
