Nazem Kadri’s latest Instagram post may have been simple, but Leafs Nation considered it an open invite of sorts. A few casual photos paired with the caption “Lately 25” were enough to stir up hope and speculation among fans in Toronto who still cherish the ten seasons he spent in blue and white.
With trade rumors already circulating and Toronto reportedly showing interest, could Kadri be teasing something bigger? While insiders have downplayed the idea of a reunion, that hasn’t stopped the fan base from dreaming, loudly and publicly.
Nazem Kadri’s Post Ignites Hope Among Leafs Fans
Within minutes, the comment section was filled with emotional pleas from Toronto fans. One wrote, “Request the trade home King,” while another added, “Brother, we need you back.”
Many echoed the same sentiment: that Kadri should return to the Leafs, with fans calling him “the missing piece” and saying there’s “unfinished business in TO.”

Kadri, now 34, spent the first decade of his NHL career in Toronto, playing 561 games and tallying 161 goals and 196 assists. His gritty two-way play and passion made him a fan favorite.
But in 2019, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he went on to win a Stanley Cup in 2022. Since then, he has been a key piece for the Calgary Flames, completing three seasons with the franchise.

Despite the excitement among fans, the reality of Kadri’s return to Toronto appears far-fetched, at least for now. Reports have circulated this summer suggesting the Leafs may have some level of interest in a reunion, but several insiders have debunked the possibility.
TSN’s Darren Dreger firmly stated Friday that “Kadri isn’t available,” and Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet backed that up, saying there have been no meaningful discussions between Toronto and Calgary regarding a trade.
Kadri’s contract is another significant hurdle. He’s signed through 2029 on a deal that carries a $7 million annual cap hit, and, more importantly, holds a full no-movement clause until next summer. That means even if the Flames wanted to move him, Kadri would have the final say. So, unless he explicitly requests a trade, something there’s been no public indication of, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Still, the fan support Kadri continues to receive speaks volumes about his legacy in Toronto. His tough, emotional style of play left a lasting impression, and even years after his departure, Leafs fans see him as someone who could bring leadership, physicality, and playoff grit back to a team looking to get over the hump.
Kadri has not publicly commented on the fan reaction to his Instagram post or the trade rumors swirling around him. For now, he remains an integral part of the Flames’ roster and is expected to suit up for them again this fall.
So while the dream of a Toronto homecoming makes for a good story, the odds are slim. But in hockey, as in life, things can change pretty quickly.
