‘I Don’t Think That’s Gonna Be Happening’ — Maple Leafs Not Moving For Auston Matthews’ Nemesis, per Insider

The Toronto Maple Leafs have consistently dominated the headlines for different reasons in the last few months after a season that unraveled faster than anyone expected. A missed playoff berth pushed the organization toward a front-office sweep and a new coach, while fans looked for signs of a new direction.

Part of that direction involves retooling on the fly, but as one surprising free agent rumor connects Toronto to a veteran defenseman with a complicated history involving captain Auston Matthews, it appears Toronto is not willing to open that can of worms.

Elliotte Friedman Casts Doubt on Maple Leafs’ Pursuit of Radko Gudas

Radko Gudas has been connected to the Maple Leafs following reports that Toronto is looking for a more physical identity on the back end.

The veteran defenseman is approaching free agency after completing his contract with the Anaheim Ducks, and Kevin Weekes recently identified Toronto and the Florida Panthers as potential landing spots.

Despite these reports, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is unconvinced that a deal will materialize. Speaking on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman acknowledged the speculation but expressed skepticism about the possibility.

He said, “By the way, there was some talk about Gudas in Toronto. I would love to see that. Think of the content…. Radko Gudas in Toronto. But I don’t think that’s going to be happening.”

Friedman’s comments are notable because Toronto has legitimate reasons to consider a player with Gudas’ profile. New general manager John Chayka has already added defensemen Darren Raddysh and Emil Andrae as part of an effort to make the blueline harder to play against.

Gudas would fit that idea to a T. He remains one of the league’s most physical defensemen and is expected to seek a short-term deal on a manageable cap hit.

However, the history between Gudas and Matthews creates an awkward situation from the fans’ perspective. On March 12, Gudas delivered the knee-on-knee hit that resulted in Matthews suffering a Grade 3 MCL tear.

The injury ended the Maple Leafs captain’s season and led to a five-game suspension for the Ducks defenseman. The incident remains one of the most controversial moments of Toronto’s campaign.

There is also previous playoff history involving Gudas and the organization. During the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, while a part of the Panthers, he famously celebrated in front of then-Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll, creating another memorable moment that Toronto fans have not forgotten.

From a financial standpoint, the Maple Leafs could comfortably fit Gudas under the salary cap. Toronto currently projects to have nearly $18.8 million in available cap space, with additional flexibility potentially coming through other roster moves. Even so, Friedman believes a move is unlikely.

If Toronto ultimately moves in another direction, several alternatives are available. For a team trying to support Matthews and reestablish a winning culture, avoiding unnecessary distractions may prove just as important as adding toughness.
