With the NHL free agency in full swing, the community is buzzing with excitement. All eyes are on the top free agents to see where they land next, the hefty contracts they sign, and all the parallel storylines.
Among the most sought-after UFAs of this free agency season, former left winger for the Winnipeg Jets, Nikolaj Ehlers, stands out. Ehlers amassed an impressive 63 points in 69 regular-season games. Moreover, he scored seven points, five of them being goals, in eight postseason games. The 29-year-old, drafted ninth overall in 2014 by the Jets, is wrapping up a seven-year, $42 million contract.
Now that Ehlers is an unrestricted free agent and still awaiting a contract, NHL fans are left wondering where he could be headed next.
Chris Johnston Touts Carolina Hurricanes As the Best Possible Destination for Nikolaj Ehlers
NHL insider Chris Johnston weighed in on the Ehlers issue. According to the NHL Rumour Report, for Johnston, while the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, and Carolina Hurricanes are the teams on the table, the Hurricanes are perhaps best suited for the former Jets winger.
Chris Johnston: Re latest on Nikolaj Ehlers: I’ve thought all along he was a great fit for the Hurricanes, wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him end up in Carolina; Capitals had interest; Colorado; someone whispered Lightning, but that’s unconfirmed – Chris Johnston Show

This hardly comes as a surprise. Elliotte Friedman also voiced a similar opinion on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast: with big names like Mitch Marner off the table, Ehlers was the most impressive performer who was still available, and the Hurricanes could be up for it: “Ehlers, with Marner off the board… Ehlers is the biggest name out there, right? Carolina, I think, they really want that guy.”
Besides, the Hurricanes are truly making their presence felt this free agency season. In the most recent development, the team traded Scott Morrow and early-round picks to the New York Rangers to acquire defenseman K’Andre Miller. Although Miller has underperformed recently, Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky thinks of the trade as a resounding success. Reiterating his firm faith in Miller, Tulsky emphasized the D-man’s fit with the team:
“K’Andre is a defenseman who we feel is a very strong fit for the way we play. He is just approaching his prime, and we are confident that he will excel in a Hurricanes sweater.”
Tulsky has a vision for the team, and Miller perfectly fits into it. The defenseman has signed a hefty contract of $7.5 million AAV through the 2032-33 season, and now NHL fans wonder, could Ehlers be the team’s next big catch? Several reports believe so. Beyond Johnston and Friedman, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff has stated that, the Hurricanes aside, the Capitals are also in contention for Ehlers.
