The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2026 playoff run ended with a 1-0 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6, closing a comeback effort in the first-round series. After falling behind 3-0, the team pushed back to extend the matchup but could not find a way past a strong performance in goal. The result brought an abrupt stop to a successful regular season, leaving players and staff to process it.
The results have not only impacted the locker room but also the families who experience every high and low alongside the players. And one such moment emerged when Emmeli Rakell, wife of forward Rickard Rakell, shared a message that captured the emotional toll of the loss and the sudden end to the routine that started back in September.
Rickard Rakell’s Wife Emmeli Shares Raw Experience on Instagram After Penguins’ Exit
Emmeli addressed the team’s elimination through a series of Instagram stories that reflected the abrupt end to the season and the emotional weight that followed. Her posts came after the Penguins fell 1-0 in overtime in Game 6 on Wednesday, ending a series that stretched to six games after Pittsburgh forced its way back from a 0-3 deficit.
In her first story, she focused on how quickly everything changes once a playoff run ends. She wrote, “One day you’re in the middle of the playoffs, then suddenly, it’s just over. And the season is over. It’s like running a marathon, pushing through pain, giving everything you have, only to have your legs cut out right before the finish line. You don’t get that closure. You don’t get to cross!”
She continued that theme in a second post, describing the immediate aftermath that players and families go through. She wrote, “Rickard always says the first day after is the hardest. It feels like a vacuum. All that energy, all that focus, all those emotions just gone. Silence replaces the noise. Routine disappears. And you’re left with this strange emptiness that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it.”
She added that the pain also reflects the value of the journey, noting, “But maybe that’s also what makes it matter so much. Because if it didn’t hurt like this when it ends, it wouldn’t have meant as much while it lasted.”
Her final story shifted toward support, as she shared an image of Rakell in the locker room after the game. She wrote, “Despite results. We are so proud of you. 12 years+ in the NHL, and your commitment never stops!”
She also wrote a message in Swedish, writing, “Du är bäst,” which means “You are the best.”

Rakell, a Swedish forward, has built a 14-season-long NHL career and has found his fit in Pittsburgh over the last five seasons. Off the ice, he has a small family with Emmeli. They married in 2021 and are raising two children, Daisy Summer and Ziggy Steel.
