What should have been a feel-good story about Brady Tkachuk joining forces with his brother in Florida has instead turned into a growing controversy.
Days after his blockbuster departure from the Ottawa Senators, Tkachuk is facing scrutiny over comments that appear to conflict with the version of events laid out by general manager Steve Staios.
The conflicting accounts have sparked debate across the NHL, with some analysts openly questioning whether the former Senators captain is attempting to rewrite the story behind his exit from Ottawa.
Brady Tkachuk Under Fire Over Trade Timeline
The criticism stems from a clear disconnect between what Tkachuk said publicly and what Staios revealed after the trade.
Speaking on Monday, Staios was direct about how things unfolded, stating that Tkachuk requested a trade roughly 10 days after Ottawa’s first-round playoff elimination.
Tkachuk, however, painted a different picture. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” Tkachuk said. “It was something that I took a little bit more time than what’s been out there to make that decision, and it was a very hard decision.”
Those comments immediately raised eyebrows around the hockey world, as they appeared to contradict Staios’ version of events.
NHL analyst Drew Livingstone was among the first to point out the discrepancy, saying: “Brady Tkachuk says this decision took more time than what’s being reported. So he’s calling Steve Staois a liar. The Sens GM said Brady requested a trade 10 days after the season ended.”
Senators insider Jack Richardson suggested that tensions between Tkachuk and the organization may have been building for quite some time. “It’s become quite clear that the organization was frustrated with Tkachuk this season. Staios saw what we all saw: that something was off. Trade request wasn’t a surprise.”
Others were far more critical of Tkachuk’s explanation. Puckin Around Podcast host Karman Gill didn’t hold back, saying, “Brady can’t stop lying, can he?”
The blunt reaction reflects the skepticism that has emerged among some fans and media members following the conflicting accounts.
Meanwhile, Duane Steinel went even further, suggesting the decision may have been made well before the offseason began. “I’m willing to go a step further. I bet he had his mind made up already during the playoffs.”
Whether that theory is accurate or not, it reflects the growing skepticism surrounding Tkachuk’s explanation.
Did the Olympics Change Everything?
Many believe Tkachuk’s decision may have started taking shape during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. While publicly backing Ottawa, he got a taste of championship hockey with Team USA, won a gold medal, and spent weeks playing alongside his brother Matthew.
After returning, the Senators were swept in the first round, and Tkachuk went pointless in the series. The disappointing finish only added to speculation that he was ready for a new chapter.
