The Toronto Maple Leafs are casting a wide net as they look for stability in the net, especially after moving goalie Joseph Woll. Several proven names have surfaced in league discussions, and the organization appears determined to examine every available route before making a major decision.
While trade targets remain part of the conversation, an unexpected alternative may offer a path that preserves Toronto’s future assets. This possibility has now brought a championship-tested veteran into focus.
Elliotte Friedman Believes Sergei Bobrovsky Could Be a Natural Fit for Toronto
Sergei Bobrovsky may be heading toward the open market, and according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs are a team worth watching if that happens.
Speaking on the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman revealed that Toronto’s front office is actively surveying the goaltending landscape. The Maple Leafs are expected to investigate several possibilities, including potential trade targets, but Friedman suggested that Bobrovsky could ultimately emerge as one of the club’s most logical options.
“ I think they’re looking in goal. [Jordan] Binnington, if he’s available, they’ll check it. [Connor] Hellebuyck, I don’t know that it’s likely; they’ll check it,” Friedman said.
Friedman then shifted the discussion toward Bobrovsky and pointed to two important connections already inside Toronto’s locker room. “Bobrovsky, don’t forget Anthony Stolarz won a Stanley Cup backing up Bobrovsky. Nobody knows him better,” Friedman explained.
This relationship could carry weight if Toronto seriously pursues the veteran netminder. Stolarz spent an entire championship season learning from Bobrovsky during Florida’s 2024 Stanley Cup run and has firsthand knowledge of his preparation, practice habits, and approach to the position.

Friedman also highlighted another connection that could work in Toronto’s favor.
“Steve Lorentz was Bobrovsky’s shooter; he’s Bobrovsky’s guy. He will always be loyal to Bobrovsky because Bobrovsky kept him in the NHL ’cause he would go shoot on him every morning,” Friedman said.
The insider went even further when discussing the possibility of Bobrovsky arriving in Toronto. “So there’s two guys there who know him extremely well. It wouldn’t shock me if he ended up being their guy, potentially.”
This prediction comes at a fascinating time.
Bobrovsky is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his seven-year, $70 million contract with the Florida Panthers. The 2-time Stanley Cup champion is reportedly seeking a long-term deal despite turning 38 in September, and negotiations with Florida appear to have stalled over contract length and financial commitment.
For Toronto, the appeal extends beyond Bobrovsky’s championship resume. Friedman emphasized that signing the veteran would allow the Maple Leafs to strengthen their crease without sacrificing prospects, draft picks, or roster players.
“And again, if they do that, it’s another guy who won’t cost you anything but money. And that’s kind of the way they look at it. If they have to do something somewhere down the road, they will,” Friedman said.

With trade prices expected to be steep for goaltenders such as Binnington or Hellebuyck, Bobrovsky’s situation presents Toronto with a very different opportunity.
Whether the Maple Leafs ultimately choose that route remains uncertain, but Friedman has clearly identified the veteran netminder as a name firmly on Toronto’s radar.
