How Many Stanley Cup Final Series Have Seen More Than 3 OTs in NHL History

The 2025 Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers has featured three games so far that have required overtime to settle a winner.

Games 1, 2, and 4 all required extra time. Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl netted the game-winning goal in both Games 1 and 4 for the Oilers, while Panthers forward Brad Marchand scored the game-winner in Game 2.

Sixty minutes have not been enough to settle a winner in three of the games so far, leading us to explore some other Stanley Cup Final series that saw multiple games require overtime.

Stanley Cup Final Series That Required More Than 3 OTs

#1. 1993 Stanley Cup Final: Montreal Canadiens vs. Los Angeles Kings

At the tail end of their dominance over the rest of the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens took on Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in the 1993 Stanley Cup Final.

Games 2 through 4 required overtime to settle a winner, starting with a hat-trick goal in the first overtime from Montreal defenseman Eric Desjardins to tie the series at 1-1.

Montreal’s John LeClair scored the overtime game-winner just 34 seconds into overtime in Game 3, followed by a second straight overtime goal from LeClair in Game 4 to give his team a 3-1 series lead.

#2. 2012-13 Stanley Cup Final: Chicago Blackhawks vs. Boston Bruins

Back in the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in four years, the Chicago Blackhawks had hopes of bringing a second title to the Windy City.

Standing in their way was the Boston Bruins, who had taken home the title just a year after Chicago did so in 2010.

With both teams so evenly matched, it wasn’t a surprise that multiple overtime games defined the series. Game 1 featured a triple-overtime thriller that was finally ended when Andrew Shaw deflected a shot from Michal Rozsival past goaltender Tuukka Rask. The Bruins then evened the series in Game 2 with a goal from Daniel Paille shortly past the midway point of the first overtime.

Finally, the Blackhawks knotted the series at two games apiece after Brent Seabrook netted the overtime winner in Game 4.

#3. 2013-14 Stanley Cup Final: Los Angeles Kings vs. New York Rangers

The Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in three years and were matched up against the New York Rangers, appearing in their first Cup Final since 1994.

Fans at Staples Center in Los Angeles (now called Crypto.com Arena) were treated to extra time in all three games hosted at the venue, and all were won by the Kings. Justin Williams potted the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 1, while team captain Dustin Brown deflected home a shot from defenseman Willie Mitchell in the second overtime of Game 2.

Returning home after Game 4 with a 3-1 series lead, the Kings won the Stanley Cup thanks to Alec Martinez’s double-overtime game-winning goal in one of the most iconic championship-winning goals in NHL history.
