‘Bit of Fabrication’ — St. Louis Blues GM Sets Record Straight on Trade Rumors Around $65 Million Ottawa Senators Target

The St. Louis Blues ended their season on a disappointing note, finishing with a 37-33-12 record and falling just four points short of a Western Conference wild-card spot. As the offseason begins, one of the biggest talking points surrounding the club has been trade speculation involving one of their cornerstone players.

St. Louis Blues GM Addresses Trade Buzz Around Robert Thomas

The player at the center of the rumors is forward Robert Thomas, who just completed the third season of his eight-year, $65 million contract. With a no-trade clause in place and the Blues on the playoff bubble at the March deadline, his name surfaced frequently in trade chatter.

The Ottawa Senators were among the clubs reportedly interested, with speculation suggesting they could have prepared a sizable offer.

However, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong quickly pushed back on those claims during exit interviews, calling much of the noise exaggerated. “Some of these trade talks… are a little bit of fabrication,” Armstrong said. “They start out and all of a sudden they get legs, and they go and they go and they go and they never stop. The cost of acquiring someone of Robert Thomas’s talent is extremely high.”

He emphasized that no one in the NHL values Thomas more than he does, noting that if the player were truly available, it would only be because another team valued him higher, which, in his view, is not the case.

After the trade deadline, Thomas also confirmed that the Blues never asked him to waive his no-move clause, despite the steady stream of rumors circulating around the league.

Even though Armstrong shut down the speculation, the Blues are still heading into a leadership transition. Armstrong’s long tenure, dating back to 2010 and highlighted by the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2019, is set to conclude in April 2026, with former Blues forward Alex Steen expected to step into the GM role.

That transition adds another layer of intrigue. While Armstrong made it clear he views Thomas as a foundational piece, a new front office could evaluate the roster differently.

“There’s a lot of conversations that need to happen this summer and those haven’t happened yet, so I can’t really speak too much on it. I guess we’ll kind of see where it goes from there,” Thomas said on his future with the Blues.

Thomas finished the season with 64 points in 64 games, missing time after suffering a significant lower-body injury in January 2026 that required a minor leg procedure.

For now, the message from St. Louis is clear: Robert Thomas remains a valued cornerstone. But with leadership changes looming and offseason conversations still ahead, the situation is one to watch closely as the Blues look to rebound next season.
