Stanley Cup Champion Not Sold on Sidney Crosby’s Penguins in Playoffs Showdown Vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Stanley Cup champion backs Flyers over Penguins, as Sidney Crosby’s team faces early playoff pressure after Game 1 loss.

The Pittsburgh Penguins opened their playoff run with a home loss that exposed clear gaps in execution, raising questions about whether Sidney Crosby can push this group past a tough rival. Philadelphia controlled the final stretch of the game and forced mistakes that proved costly, showing a level of composure that Pittsburgh could not match.

The game turned physical, with both teams leaving little room for error as the game progressed. This early result has also influenced outside opinion, with a Stanley Cup champion openly backing the Flyers heading into Game 2.

Chris Pronger Backs Flyers Over Sidney Crosby’s Penguins in Heated Playoff Matchup

Crosby is leading the Pittsburgh’s push this postseason, his 21st NHL season, but not everyone is convinced his team has the edge in this series. Hall of Famer and Stanley Cup champion Chris Pronger shared his first-round predictions on X and picked the Philadelphia Flyers to win in 7 games, signaling confidence in their current form over Pittsburgh’s experience.

A fan responded to it and questioned his stance, suggesting that he has a bias against Crosby. Pronger pushed back, saying, “Who said I hate Sid. Just think Flyers are rolling right now.” His response showed he trusts Philadelphia’s current form and system more than Pittsburgh’s experienced core as the series moves forward.

Game 1 supported that view, as the Flyers secured a 3-2 win and took a 1-0 lead. Travis Sanheim scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, while rookie Porter Martone added an insurance goal in his playoff debut for a 3-1 lead. Pittsburgh had its chances, but only Bryan Rust scored late in that period to cut the lead to 3-2, and failed to win the game. Defensive lapses in crucial moments allowed the game to slip away for Crosby’s camp.

Crosby, who finished the regular season with 74 points in 68 games, was also involved in one of the early flashpoints. During the first period, he got tangled with Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale and pulled off his helmet, leading to a roughing penalty. Later in the third period, he also received a slashing penalty following an incident with Travis Sanheim.

For Pittsburgh, the challenge now is to adjust quickly before the series shifts to Philadelphia. Goaltender Stuart Skinner made 17 saves in Game 1, but the team lacked consistency in front of him. While the Penguins generated offensive looks, they struggled to convert when it mattered most.

Inside the locker room, Crosby and Malkin stressed the need for discipline. Malkin pointed out how easily the Penguins fell into Philadelphia’s style, saying, “We started fighting. This is what they want… after a whistle, we need to just go away and play smart.”

The series carries extra significance as it marks the first playoff meeting between these teams since 2018. Both teams entered with identical regular-season records, but Pittsburgh earned home ice through a tiebreaker. That advantage did not hold in Game 1, increasing urgency for Game 2 at PPG Paints Arena.

As the series continues, Pittsburgh must clean up defensive errors and stay disciplined, while Philadelphia looks to maintain its rhythm and extend control.
