Sidney Crosby Trade Rumors Back in the Spotlight After NHL Insider’s Latest Claim

Sidney Crosby trade rumors resurface as NHL insider Michael Russo comments, amid Penguins’ performance and recent league trades.

As the 2025-26 NHL season moves through December, several teams have been active on the trade front, making moves to improve their lineups or plan for the future. Minnesota, Vancouver, Edmonton, and other teams have exchanged players and draft picks, resulting in shifts in team rosters and sparking speculation about potential further trades. The combination of big-name moves and smaller depth trades has kept fans and analysts focused on potential roster changes.

The flurry of trades has also brought renewed attention to one player in particular: Sidney Crosby. His name has resurfaced in trade discussions amid a busy season and several high-profile moves across the league.

Sidney Crosby in Trade Talks as Rumors Gain Momentum

Recent trades across the NHL, including Minnesota acquiring Quinn Hughes from Vancouver and Edmonton adding Tristan Jarry, Sam Poulin, and Spencer Stastney, have fueled discussions about other possible moves. Amid this, Penguins captain Crosby has become a central figure in trade speculation, even as he continues to lead Pittsburgh on the ice. The team sits at 14-8-9 and fifth in the Metropolitan Division, showing competitiveness but struggling to finish games in regulation consistently.

Crosby, 38, remains a key contributor, averaging over 19 minutes per game while scoring 19 goals and adding 15 assists in 31 games. His two-year contract, worth $17.4 million, expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, making him an unrestricted free agent and a natural subject of trade discussion.

In a recent video shared by Sportsnet 590 The FAN on X, NHL insider Michael Russo discussed Crosby’s potential availability, saying,

“Obviously, Sid became available. I don’t mind that one… But I still think [Minnesota Wild GM] wants to go big game hunting… I guarantee you Bill [Guerin] is going to now do that with your linen about some of those guys.”

Russo also noted that Minnesota may reconsider additional high-profile moves after acquiring Quinn Hughes, highlighting the limits teams face in acquiring multiple star players.

Crosby himself addressed trade speculation in September during an interview on Elliotte Friedman’s “32 Thoughts” podcast, saying,

“That’s the thing that sucks about losing. When you lose, that’s what comes with losing- that speculation. When you win, there’s no speculation. It’s: ‘Who are they picking up? Who is the deadline acquisition?’ When you lose, it’s: ‘Who’s going?’ That’s the crappy part.”

Despite the speculation, Crosby’s performance remains crucial for the Penguins. He has scored 14 goals in team victories this season, continues to lead the power play, and sets an example for younger players. With the trade deadline approaching, all eyes will be on how Pittsburgh handles its roster, but Crosby’s role remains central to the team’s on-ice success.
