The Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin rivalry has defined an era of NHL hockey. Now, they may be preparing for what could be their final couple of games against each other.
Crosby, like many around the league, is closely watching Ovechkin’s looming decision about his future.
Sidney Crosby Waiting on Alex Ovechkin’a Decision
For much of the season, speculation has surrounded Ovechkin’s future. At 41 years old and nearing the end of his 21st NHL campaign with the Washington Capitals, questions about how much longer he plans to play continue to follow him.
Ovechkin has repeatedly said no decision has been made, and that he will evaluate things after the season based largely on how he feels physically.
That uncertainty has not gone unnoticed by Crosby, the longtime captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The two superstars could face each other for the final time this weekend, with Pittsburgh and Washington set for back-to-back matchups after more than two decades of competing against one another.
Crosby admitted Ovechkin’s looming decision has been on his mind. “I’ve been thinking about him a lot, because I know it’s something that has got to be on his mind constantly right now. When you get to a certain age, it’s the way it is. Every player is going to have to deal with it at some point,” Crosby told The Athletic.
The timing adds another layer of significance. With the Penguins holding a strong position in the Metropolitan Division and the Capitals trailing in the wild-card race, a playoff matchup between the longtime rivals appears unlikely. That makes these regular-season meetings potentially their final on-ice battles.
Crosby also reflected on Ovechkin’s legacy, noting, “He’s accomplished so much and has had an amazing career. And I know that he still has an incredible passion for that game. That’s obvious. It’s definitely crossed my mind a lot lately, wondering what he’s going to do, because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The two icons entered the league a year apart, Ovechkin in 2004 and Crosby in 2005, and have spent nearly their entire careers competing in the same division. Crosby acknowledged it would feel strange not seeing Ovechkin across the ice anymore, especially given how often they’ve faced each other over the last 20 years.
For now, nothing is decided. But with time winding down on the regular season, the hockey world, including Crosby, is waiting to see whether these upcoming games could mark the final chapter of one of the NHL’s greatest rivalries.
