Sunday’s NHL Stadium Series clash between the Lightning and Bruins had it all. In front of a sold-out crowd of 64,617 fans at Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay staged its first-ever four-goal comeback to beat Boston 6-5 in a shootout.
But the night’s defining moment was a rare goalie fight between Jeremy Swayman and Andrei Vasilevskiy that set the hockey world buzzing.
Swayman vs. Vasilevskiy: A Goalie Fight No One Expected
The chaos began at 11:01 in the second period with Boston holding a 5-2 lead. Lightning forward Brandon Hagel took a few extra jabs at the puck after a whistle near the Bruins’ net, drawing a response from Swayman and several Boston skaters.
That’s when Vasilevskiy decided to get involved. Skating the length of the ice, the Lightning netminder met Swayman at center ice. Swayman motioned for Vasilevskiy to drop his helmet, and without hesitation, he did. The two goalies squared up and dropped the gloves, sending the crowd into disbelief.

The fight was brief but memorable. Vasilevskiy appeared to get the upper hand, landing a few clean shots before officials stepped in to separate them. It marked the first fight of either goalie’s NHL career and the first goalie fight ever in an outdoor NHL game.
Both Swayman and Vasilevskiy were assessed for two minutes for leaving the crease. And five minutes for fighting. Despite the scrap, there was no bad blood. The two were seen smiling, laughing, and hugging after the game, clearly appreciating the moment for what it was.
Vasilevskiy explained the moment afterward, saying he reacted on instinct when he saw Swayman swinging, and “He accepted so big thanks to him”. Swayman, meanwhile, joked about taking on “the biggest, toughest goalie in the league” and joked he might retire from fighting after just one bout.
The moment sent social media into a frenzy. Analysts, reporters, and former players all chimed in, celebrating the rare and electric scene.
One NHL analyst summed it up perfectly: “Who cares about the national championship? We have a GOALIE FIGHT in the NHL.” Reporter Jonny Lazarus added, “The best kinds of fights are when everyone skates away smiling about it. These guys knew what they were doing was epic.”

ESPN’s Arda Ocal was just as fired up: “GOALIE FIGHT!!! Respect to both goalies here – Swayman takes his mask off, motions to Vasilevskiy to do the same, he obliges, THEN they throw BOMBS.”

Former hockey player Jack Jablonski joked, “ANOTHER GOALIE FIGHT. I love how they can fight and then just get to go back to playing goalie with no consequences.Would be awesome to see them have to serve the 5 minutes in the penalty box.”
