The Ottawa Senators are locked in a high-stakes Atlantic Division playoff race where the margin for error is razor-thin. While on-ice progress is evident, a sudden surge of off-ice hullabaloo has shifted the spotlight onto captain Brady Tkachuk.
Following public criticism from his father on the Wingmen podcast, scrutiny has shifted toward internal team dynamics, prompting insider warnings about the impact of these comments.
Jimmy Murphy’s Warning Adds Pressure on Senators Captain Brady Tkachuk
Tkachuk has been central to Ottawa’s push, but the conversation around him has expanded beyond performance. The fresh attention is due to the comments from his father, Keith Tkachuk, during a Wingmen podcast appearance, where he criticized how teams handle injuries and player usage.
Keith said, “Holy Christ, (Brady’s) whole team: ‘Oh, my pinky hurts. I’m out for 6–8 (weeks),’” and added, “I just had a bad sleep, so I can’t play today.’ Oh my god… disgusting. ‘I can’t play back-to-back.’ Mismanagement.”
He also questioned Brady’s ice time, saying, “You didn’t play that much last game either. I just wanted to throw that in there,” and followed it with, “Why play him a lot, and it’s in a big game?”
Tkachuk has seen a drop in his ice time this season, roughly a two-minute reduction from two seasons ago. This has prompted some internal disagreement, which has now come to the surface.
Those remarks from his father became a talking point, especially with the timing coming during a playoff push. NHL insider Jimmy Murphy added to the discussion by sharing the clip on X and writing, “As my Dad always said: ‘Loose lips sink ships.’ The Sens appear to be sinking. Yeah, this worked for the Panthers, but something tells me this Ottawa team isn’t about to become Florida the last two years.”
Brady Tkachuk addressed the situation soon after, making it clear he did not view the comments the same way others did. He said, “I completely respect my dad,” and added, “He’s going to be a Hall of Famer. So I’m not going to put words in his mouth or explain what he said.”
He also explained how the message may have been misunderstood, saying, “Being a part of it and after watching it back, I think it was pretty clear he was talking about Florida. I just don’t know how that got turned and misconstrued.”
While that explanation helped calm part of the discussion, other issues have kept attention on him. He was fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct following an incident against Buffalo, where he still contributed on the scoresheet and stayed active physically during the game in just under 16 minutes of ice time.
Ottawa has gone 3-2 in its last five games and continues to battle for a wild-card position with 88 points. The team has shown improvement compared to past seasons, but gaps in execution remain, especially in tougher matchups.
As they prepare for the next set of games, including a matchup against Minnesota, the challenge will be to keep attention on the ice while handling the outside noise.
