The timing couldn’t have been more noticeable. Just days after the New York Rangers were knocked out of playoff contention, veteran center Mika Zibanejad reportedly sold his West Village townhouse for $13 million—a decision that has only intensified speculation about his future with the team.
Zibanejad, 32, bought the property in 2022 for $9.7 million. The five-storey townhouse, tucked away in Manhattan’s historic West Village, was quietly sold as a “whisper listing,” meaning it never officially hit the market.
The sale might not mean much on its own. But combined with the Rangers’ disappointing season and Zibanejad’s visible frustration, fans and insiders alike are beginning to wonder: Is this the first step toward an eventual departure?
Rangers Trade Rumors: Is Mika Zibanejad Heading Out The Door?
Zibanejad’s performance in 2024–25 was a far cry from what the Rangers needed. He notched 20 goals and 42 assists across 82 games. But his -22 rating was among the worst on the team and raised questions about his defensive effort.
The Rangers finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs—a major letdown for a roster with Stanley Cup aspirations.
General Manager Chris Drury has already begun restructuring, moving key players like Filip Chytil and Ryan Lindgren. Zibanejad’s name has since surfaced in multiple trade rumors.
Despite being under contract through 2030 with a full no-movement clause, his recent actions suggest a shift in tone. Earlier in the season, Zibanejad said he had no intention of leaving. “I think I’ve earned it,” he said in March, referencing the terms of his contract. But things have changed since then.
During his exit interview, Zibanejad didn’t mince his words. “It’s the worst feeling ever,” he said about missing the postseason. He admitted the early months of the campaign were especially difficult, both for him and the team.
Now, with the Rangers likely entering a period of serious retooling, Zibanejad’s long-term role is less clear. Any trade away would require his approval, and the Rangers would almost certainly need to retain salary or offer sweeteners to make a deal work.
Still, if Drury is committed to a fresh identity, nothing seems off the table.
Mika Zibanejad’s Focus Shifts To International Ice
While his NHL future remains uncertain, Zibanejad is already preparing for his next challenge—this time on the international stage. He’s officially set to represent Team Sweden at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship in Stockholm.
Zibanejad previously participated in the 4 Nations Face-Off and spoke openly about the pride he feels playing for his country. “I don’t think you can compare that to anything,” he said. “To play with the best players out of Sweden and the best players out of those countries, it’s awesome.”
Though it’s too early to predict whether Zibanejad will return to the Rangers next season, this international detour provides a temporary shift in focus, and maybe a much-needed reset.
