Hughes’ time in Vancouver remains under scrutiny, with new insight pointing to his stance during the well-documented rift between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. Speaking on the “Sekeres and Price” podcast, insider Cam Robinson broke down recent comments and suggested Hughes may have quietly aligned himself during that period.
“I think, as a player, when you have someone who is a leader for you, and is putting up the type of points that JT Miller was, and the type of role that he was playing when he was at his peak powers there in Vancouver… that it’s like, obviously, he was a highly impactful player and someone that you want to try to win with,” Robinson said.
The tension between Miller and Pettersson had already reached a breaking point during the 2024-25 season, forcing the organization into a major decision. Vancouver ultimately traded Miller to the New York Rangers, but the fallout did not stop there. The team struggled to regain balance, and within months, Hughes was also dealt in a move to the Minnesota Wild that signaled a full rebuild.

Robinson believes Hughes’ public comments offered subtle clues about where he stood. “He didn’t really point fingers at any point,” Robinson explained, but added that “if you were reading between the lines…, there was one player Quinn Hughes didn’t mention.”
“And when you look at the rift between JT and Pettersson, it seems Quinn was on the JT side,” Robinson said.
Hughes initially tried to act as a bridge between teammates, but reports suggested frustration built as the situation dragged on. The leadership challenge became more complex as performance dipped and the environment grew tense. That period played a role in shaping management’s decision to reset the roster.
Meanwhile, the Canucks’ season has completely derailed, with injuries and defensive issues pushing them to the bottom of the standings. The trade that sent Hughes to the Wild brought in young assets, but it also marked the end of a core that once showed promise.
