The Minnesota Wild officially punched their ticket to the postseason with a commanding victory over the Vancouver Canucks, but the real story developed long before the final horn sounded.
For the first time since his blockbuster midseason trade, former captain Quinn Hughes stood on the opposite side of the ice from the franchise he once led, a moment many expected would result in strong emotion.
However, as the pre-game hype met the reality of the locker room, the expected sentimentality was nowhere to be found. Instead, a direct comment from the star defenseman regarding his former teammates drew strong reactions, turning a potential “tribute” night into a heated debate over loyalty and leadership.
Quinn Hughes Gets Criticized After Comments on Former Canucks Teammates
Hughes played a key role in Minnesota’s 5-2 win, recording an assist and finishing plus-4 as the Wild confirmed their spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Since arriving in December, he has adjusted quickly and continued to produce, adding to a strong run that includes 50 points in 43 games with his new team.
His move from Vancouver came during a season where the Canucks made major roster changes and dropped to the bottom of the standings, leading to a reset around younger players.
The focus, however, moved away from his on-ice impact after his Thursday post-skate comments about facing Vancouver. When asked about seeing his former team, Hughes said, “Honestly, I don’t even really know a lot of their guys. I played with some of the young guys there for three or four months, but a lot of the guys I was there with for the meat of my six years aren’t there.”
While his explanation pointed to roster turnover, the response was viewed by many as lacking connection to his former group, especially considering he was wearing the “C” for the franchise.
That reaction opened the door for several analysts and media voices to share their views. Adam Kierszenblat posted on X and wrote, “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Hughes was checked out before being traded by the Canucks, but dropping ‘Honestly, I don’t even really know a lot of their guys’ is just in bad taste. Easy layup and somehow threw the ball out of the stadium.”
Others took a more neutral approach while still noting the moment. Ryan Henderson, a producer for Donnie & Dhali, shared the clip and wrote, “Interesting stuff in here from Quinn.”
There were also fans and creators who looked at the situation from a broader team perspective. A post from JABO Vancouver read, “I don’t really care what Quinn Hughes has to say. He’s gone. The Canucks are headed in a new direction. Nothing to sweat, good or bad.”
Still, one response stood out for its sharper tone. Canucks Army senior writer Wyatt Arndt added, “Two years ago I would have never imagined we’d have Quinn Hughes trying to track down Mark Messier as most disliked ex-captain lol,” showing how quickly public opinion can change after a single moment.
After the game, the Wild defenseman told Sportsnet, “Definitely a little weird, but you move on. Happy to be here right now. Probably being in Vancouver would be a little weirder than this. But it’s nice we got the win. We’ve got a big weekend coming up.”
