The Edmonton Oilers continue to draw attention for their strong offense, but their defense remains under the microscope. As the season progresses, analysts are still pointing toward the gap between their scoring and their work in the defensive zone.
The Oilers’ recent games have again brought focus to how the team handles pressure. It drew a response from a Hall of Fame defenseman who shared his view on the situation.
Hall of Famer Chris Pronger Questions Edmonton Oilers’ Defensive Commitment
The Oilers defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday, earning their second win in three games. Goaltender Connor Ingram stopped 24 shots and helped Edmonton limit high-quality chances for much of the game.
Edmonton focused on defending its own zone and forcing Vegas to attack from the outside. The Oilers created separation in the third period when Leon Draisaitl scored during a 4-on-4 situation for his fifth goal in five games. Vasily Podkolzin also scored early in the period to restore Edmonton’s lead and give the team control.

Vegas tried to push back late while short-handed. Jack Eichel scored to bring the Golden Knights within one goal before Kasperi Kapanen secured the result with an empty-net goal.
After the game, discussion about Edmonton’s defensive play continued online. Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Pronger shared his thoughts on X, writing, “Defense is a mindset. You need full buy-in and commitment to execute at a high level. They have not gotten to that point yet this year.”
Pronger’s tweet points to a larger issue that has followed the Oilers through the 2025-26 season. They continue to rank among the NHL’s highest-scoring teams, but their defensive numbers remain near the bottom.
The Oilers’ defensive zone coverage has been problematic in several games. Players have struggled with assignments and sometimes fail to clear space around the crease, which leaves open chances near the net.
The pairing of Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard remains the Oilers’ most dependable defensive unit. However, the other pairings have not provided the same level of protection in front of the goaltenders. Newly acquired Connor Murphy has been skating with Jake Walman in practice, though coach Kris Knoblauch has indicated the team is still evaluating its defensive combinations.

Goaltending has also been part of the team’s adjustments this season. Edmonton traded Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins and acquired Tristan Jarry in an effort to address struggles in net. So far, the results have been disappointing, with Jarry posting a 3.85 goals-against average and a .864 save percentage since arriving in Edmonton.
Despite those concerns, the Oilers hold a 31-25-8 record, and the win over Vegas has given them two crucial points. Now they will prepare for their next test against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.
