Maple Leafs News and Rumors: Why Pete DeBoer Is Unlikely To Replace Craig Berube

Pete DeBoer is unlikely to replace Craig Berube, as insider insight suggests Toronto does not fit the situation DeBoer is seeking right now.

The Toronto Maple Leafs keep circling the same questions as the standings tighten around them, with effort and execution rarely lining up on the same night. Progress feels fragile, and each setback seems to reopen debates that never fully fade.

That uncertainty has shifted attention toward the bench, where speculation has grown louder even as the season still hangs in the balance.

Why Pete DeBoer Isn’t the Right Fit for Toronto Maple Leaf’s Current Situation?

Toronto’s 15-15-5 record has kept the team close enough to stay relevant but distant enough to expose familiar flaws. The Leafs have the talent to score, driven by William Nylander’s consistent production and John Tavares’ finishing touch, yet games often swing on details they fail to control. Missed opportunities on the power play stall momentum, while defensive lapses and uneven goaltending erase otherwise solid stretches.

The pattern leaves the team without rhythm, as they lost 5-1 to the Dallas Stars on Sunday. This was their third consecutive loss, and they have been outscored 14-4 in this stretch, shattering their confidence.

Those frustrations initially intensified after a lopsided loss to the Washington Capitals, followed by pointed comments from head coach Craig Berube. After the game, Berube said the opposing team showed “way more urgency,” and when asked to explain the disconnect between effort and results, he added, “Ask those guys, not me.”

The remarks drew attention because they echoed broader concerns about accountability. It fueled speculation about whether a coaching change could be in play if the slide continues.

That backdrop has brought Pete DeBoer’s name into the conversation, mainly due to his résumé and availability. DeBoer was dismissed by the Stars in June after a controversial playoff decision, closing a chapter that added to his league-leading total of playoff wins without a Stanley Cup. His history includes deep postseason runs with multiple teams, and his connection to Toronto dates back to his 1988 draft by the organization, although he never played in the NHL.

Recent reporting, however, suggests the fit is far from natural. “Leafs Morning Take”, host Nick Alberga questioned whether DeBoer would even consider Toronto, given the pressure surrounding the roster and the lack of stability. NHL insider David Pagnotta offered clarity, explaining that DeBoer is comfortable in his current position.

“With respect to DeBoer, what I was told was – he’s comfortable right now, and he’s still getting paid by Dallas for the rest of the season,” Pagnotta said. “Nice. And he’s focused on Canada. So yeah, he’s chilling.”

More importantly, Pagnotta outlined the type of situation DeBoer would consider if he were to return. From what he’s heard, DeBoer would only consider a team that is already “right there,” viewing himself as a finishing piece rather than a reset button. Pagnotta emphasized that DeBoer sees his value in pushing a contender over the edge toward a Cup Final, not in taking over a group still searching for its identity.

From that angle, Toronto does not align with what DeBoer is believed to want, unless the organization makes a major financial commitment that signals immediate belief in contention.

For now, the Leafs appear more likely to ride out the turbulence than pursue a coach who may see their situation as unfinished work rather than a final step.
