The Toronto Maple Leafs are enduring one of their roughest runs in recent seasons. They’re coming off a one-sided 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Sunday, a defeat that dropped them to the bottom of the Atlantic Division and marked their fifth loss in six games.
As the struggles continue to pile up, concern among fans is growing, especially after William Nylander spoke openly following the loss.
Leafs Fans Growing Uneasy After Nylander’s Postgame Comments
Toronto’s lone goal came in the third period from Scott Laughton. Dallas, meanwhile, scored once in the first period and then poured in four more in the third to pull away comfortably.
After the game, Nylander admitted the stretch has been unfamiliar territory for him, saying, “I don’t know if I’ve felt like this before. If I had a stretch like this, I’m not sure. I don’t feel like I’ve had that in the NHL, at least.”
Nylander himself has been stuck in a slump. He managed just four points over his last 10 games and going 11 straight games without a goal.
Saturday’s loss also highlighted a possible disconnect within the team. There were noticeably different messages coming from Toronto, as the captain’s comments didn’t quite line up with those of the head coach.
Head coach Craig Berube pointed to mental mistakes and an avoidable late second-period goal. While captain Auston Matthews struck a more positive tone, saying the team was mentally fine and liked the overall effort despite the loss.
Still, much of the conversation afterward centered on Nylander’s comments, which sparked strong reactions from fans online.
One fan summed up the immediate worry by writing, “Damn that’s concerning to hear,” reflecting fears that Nylander’s comments pointed to something more serious than just a rough stretch.
Another fan was more blunt, placing the blame on the coaching situation by saying, “Bérubé has broke him..” A fan simply called the situation “depressing”, while another labeled it “The season that broke William Nylander,” suggesting this year has pushed the usually composed winger to an unfamiliar place mentally.
One user joked, “OMG hes got feelings. Considering he ghosted the team for like 4 weeks nice to see something at least,” highlighting frustration with Nylander’s quiet stretches.
There was also plenty of criticism focused on Nylander’s on-ice performance. One fan pointed out, “He sure doesn’t look right out on the ice. Fumbling pucks like I’ve never seen, turning the puck over like crazy, and not able to take the puck away like he has in the past.” That sentiment echoed what many fans have been seeing.
While there were some positives in Sunday’s game, Toronto outshooting Dallas 28–21 and generating 11 high-danger chances to the Stars’ three. It wasn’t enough to change the mood. The lack of results continues to outweigh the underlying numbers.
The Leafs will next face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
