The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up another impressive win Sunday, defeating the Florida Panthers 5-2. But while the scoreboard told one story, the moment everyone around the NHL couldn’t stop talking about involved Sidney Crosby and Matthew Tkachuk.
NHL Reacts as Crosby Outmuscles Tkachuk
The play came along the boards in the Panthers’ zone. Crosby chased down a loose puck as Tkachuk stepped in looking to deliver a hit. Instead, Crosby absorbed the contact, held his ground, and sent Tkachuk tumbling to the ice.
The sequence drew a loud reaction from the crowd and quickly spread across social media, with fans and analysts praising Crosby’s strength and balance.
NHL analyst Brady Trettenero joked, “It’s because Sid never skips leg day,” highlighting Crosby’s lower-body strength.
Penguins beat writer Josh Yohe added, “Tkachuk just went to hit Sid and bounced off of him. Much to the crowd’s delight,” emphasizing how cleanly Crosby absorbed the contact.
The Hockey Hub account chimed in as well, calling Crosby “a beast” after the takedown. Meanwhile, Gino Hard noted, “It was today Matthew Tkachuk learned… You don’t hit Sidney Crosby. Sid’s center of gravity is just unmatched.”
The physical moment only added to a dominant night for the Penguins captain. Crosby finished with a goal and two assists, extending his NHL record to 21 consecutive seasons averaging at least a point per game. He now has 72 points (29 goals, 43 assists) despite missing time in the season due to injury.
“It’s a stat. I think it speaks to the teams that we’ve had, the players that I’ve had the opportunity to play with. I think that’s a big part of it. I mean, it’s hard. It’s a stat, but you try to be consistent and, like I said, I’ve played on some great teams and played with some great players,” Crosby said.
Historically, Crosby continues to separate himself. He owns more point-per-game seasons than anyone in NHL history, ahead of Wayne Gretzky. He also has 16 seasons with at least 70 points, tied with Marcel Dionne and Ron Francis, trailing only Gordie Howe and Gretzky.
Crosby also tied Brett Hull for seventh in even-strength goals, with only active leader Alex Ovechkin ahead among current players.
Crosby and longtime teammate Evgeni Malkin also recorded their 171st multi-point game together, passing Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin for fifth-most by a duo.
