The final days of the year often bring increased intensity from every NHL team, resulting in highly competitive games. With the New Year countdown already underway, players are playing with more passion to help their team before January arrives.
Florida found itself in that spot Tuesday night, playing from control to chaos in a game that changed fast. What followed fueled a debate well beyond the final score and set the tone heading into a high-profile outdoor game.
Brad Marchand’s Hit on Mike Matheson Draws Strong Reaction After Panthers’ OT Loss to Canadiens
The Florida Panthers dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Montreal Canadiens at Amerant Bank Arena, despite controlling much of the third period and building a 2-0 lead. Brad Marchand opened the scoring on the power play, and Sam Reinhart added another as Florida pressed the pace and generated steady pressure.
The Panthers finished with 30 shots, but the spotlight of the game shifted after a heavy hit from Marchand on Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson, which drew immediate attention. The contact raised intensity on the ice and quickly became the focal point of post-game discussion.
Montreal used that momentum to claw back late in regulation. Cole Caufield got the Canadiens on the board, and Nick Suzuki tied the game with 1:22 remaining to force overtime. In the extra frame, Marchand took a roughing penalty, and Suzuki ended it on the power play.
The loss stung for Florida, especially after holding control for long stretches before the game slipped away.

Reaction to the hit poured in online as video clips spread. NHL insider Eric Macramalla shared the play on X and wrote, “Marchand should be suspended for this shot to Matheson’s head. The head was the main point of contact, and the contact was avoidable (Rule 48). But he’ll just get fined.” That comment opened the door to strong fan responses, many of which focused on discipline and player safety.
One fan echoed the concern, saying, “Absolutely should. Seen people say he dropped to his knee, so it changes it… pffft, nope. He targeted it the whole way. Doesn’t even tuck his elbow. He slightly extends it. @NHLPlayerSafety suspension!”
Another added, “Yes, should be a suspension.” As the discussion continued, attention turned to timing, with one fan asking, “This should take Marchand out of the Winter Classic, right?”
Others remained skeptical, with one comment reading, “Yeah, he plays for Florida. He doesn’t get suspended anymore.”
Another NHL Insider, Elliotte Friedman, echoed the surprise, stating, “No hearing for Brad Marchand regarding OT roughing penalty on Mike Matheson. I admit I’m surprised, I thought there would be for the contact to the head. My suspicions on why it won’t be a suspension: *NHL felt it was a penalty on the ice, that’s it *Marchand elbow low and tucked; Matheson low to ice.”

Marchand addressed the loss afterward, keeping the focus on execution rather than the controversy. “They are very gifted,’’ Marchand said, via NHL. “We made a couple of mistakes that we would sure like to have back, but they are a very gifted group, for sure.”
Florida now turns its attention to the NHL Winter Classic on Friday night, a marquee stage as the New Year arrives. The Panthers face the New York Rangers on Jan. 2 at 8:00 p.m. ET, entering the outdoor game with a 21-15-3 record. The Rangers sit at 19-17-5 and just outside the playoff picture.
