The Ottawa Senators became the first team to be booted out of the 2026 NHL playoffs after the Carolina Hurricanes got the brooms out in Game 4 and swept Brady Tkachuk and the rest of the crew. In light of that exit, it didn’t take very long for trade rumors to swirl around the franchise’s captain, given the toll of the season and how things unravelled towards the end.
While Tkachuk did address the rumors and speculation right around Game 1, that hasn’t quieted the noise just yet.
Ottawa Senators GM Makes Feelings Crystal Clear on Brady Tkachuk Trade Rumors
Speaking at locker room cleanout day, Senators GM Steve Staios was asked for his thoughts on the exit speculation hanging over Brady Tkachuk’s future in Ottawa. To some, Staios’s words raised more questions than answers.
“This comes up often. I don’t think that.. there’s nothing that we have talked about or thought about where that conversation should happen,” the Ottawa GM told the media.
“It’s nonsense is what is it. It depends on what link and what fanbase it’s coming from. I don’t read it, I don’t bother with it. We know what we have internally, we have great communication with our players. We really don’t focus on it.”
Speaking after Game 1 in an interview with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, Tkachuk said, “People are always gonna be talking about it,” stressing that the speculation has not come from him or the organization. “At the end of the day, my sole focus is winning the Stanley Cup, being here, and giving absolutely everything I have to this team.”
Tkachuk showed some fight in the four games of the Senators’ short-lived playoff run, but it didn’t show up on the scoreboard. The Ottawa captain failed to register a point in any of the games, prompting questions about his approach to a vital postseason. More importantly, Tkachuk and Tim Stützle combined for a solitary point all series, highlighting a glaring lack of production from the team’s top dogs.
“You come in, and you just want to win a Stanley Cup. Everyone believed that in here,” a teary-eyed Tkachuk said after the 4-2 loss. “For it to be as tight a series and not go our way every game, it’s really tough.”
Stützle also addressed the speculation around Tkachuk’s future in his exit interview, stating, “It’s extremely tough the stuff he deals with all the time. He’s taken tremendous steps as a leader, and he’s just going to get better.”
Whether he gets better in Ottawa is the question on everyone’s minds heading into what is shaping up to be an eventful summer, not just for Ottawa, but for a bunch of teams who fell short towards the end. The 2026 free agency class is not exactly full of game-changers, which means teams will have to get a little creative to solve their problems.
The Sens will have to wait a year to put a contract on the table for Tkachuk, but if the Team USA gold medal winner decides to move to greener pastures, it would severely hamper Ottawa’s leverage, given Tkachuk has a full no-movement clause, just like Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews.
