Connor McDavid rarely stays out of the spotlight for long, but this time it wasn’t a highlight-reel goal or a playoff performance driving the conversation. Instead, a fresh rumor connecting the Edmonton Oilers captain to another franchise emerged, and it triggered an immediate reaction from across the hockey world.
While the speculation grabbed attention, it also fueled a familiar debate about where fan excitement ends and reality begins.
Oilers Fans Rip Connor McDavid-to-Flyers Rumor
The latest speculation traces back to former Philadelphia Flyers forward and current radio analyst Todd Fedoruk, who floated the possibility during an appearance on Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fanatic.
While discussing McDavid’s long-term future, Fedoruk suggested the Flyers could eventually become a destination.
“He is going to be a player who will be calling teams. His agent is going to be looking for him to go places,” Fedoruk said before adding, “There are rumors that Philadelphia is a place that Connor McDavid wants to go.”
These comments quickly spread across social media, but the rumor faces a significant obstacle.
McDavid is already under contract with Edmonton through the 2027-28 season after signing a two-year, $25 million extension carrying a $12.5 million annual cap hit. Any move would therefore require one of the biggest trades in recent NHL history rather than a straightforward free-agent signing.
This reality shaped much of the public reaction. Rather than debating whether Philadelphia had enough cap space, many fans questioned whether there was any legitimate basis for the rumor in the first place.
Hockey community account Bleed Oil Blue captured that disbelief by posting, “Now Oilers McDavid to Philadelphia… this is a new one,” highlighting just how unexpected the speculation felt among Edmonton supporters.
Hockey account The Warning Take mocked the idea by writing, “From the creators of 2026’s smash hit ‘Flyers in 7’ comes a new Philadelphia Flyers fantasy adventure.”
Oilers fan Derek Dunn responded with, “There are? Lol,” questioning whether such rumors even existed. NHL analyst Dan the Flyera Fan leaned fully into sarcasm, posting, “And in 2028, if they’re real lucky, Al Arbour will rise from the dead and the Flyers can hire a real coach, too!”
The skepticism wasn’t limited to fans.
NHL analyst Andrew McInnis dismissed the report with a simple “Yeah right,” while Steel City Scoreboard criticized the speculation itself, writing, “Philly media might be the most delusional media in the country. This is pretty funny.”

Philadelphia does have the cap flexibility to absorb McDavid’s contract and has shown a willingness to pursue elite talent after aggressively chasing Leo Carlsson before extending Trevor Zegras.
But despite the buzz generated by the speculation, the prevailing sentiment connects very little of it to reality. Edmonton has absolutely no reason to move the face of the franchise, who remains firmly locked into his current contract.
