Oilers Terminate Forward’s Contract, Free Up $1,200,000 for Trade Market

Edmonton Oilers clear cap space after a roster move, opening flexibility for the trade market as the New Year approaches and the playoff race tightens.

The Christmas break is now in the rearview mirror, and the Edmonton Oilers are turning their focus toward the stretch run before the New Year. Sitting at the top of the Pacific Division, Edmonton enters this phase knowing that strong results have come alongside clear areas that still need attention.

As the calendar flips, the Oilers are not only evaluating their on-ice play but also making quiet roster moves that could shape their approach to the trade market in the weeks ahead. One of those decisions became public just before the break and carries clear cap implications.

Oilers Mutually Part Ways With David Tomasek, Creating $1.2 Million in Cap Flexibility

NHL insider Jesse Courville-Lynch reported on X that the Oilers and forward David Tomasek agreed to a mutual contract termination, a move that will send the 29-year-old back to Sweden to play for Farjestad BK in the SHL. The decision immediately clears $1.2 million in cap space, giving Edmonton added flexibility as the New Year approaches and trade discussions begin to heat up.

Tomasek signed a one-year deal with the Oilers in April after a dominant season overseas, where he was named SHL MVP and led the league in scoring. The transition to the NHL proved difficult, not because of effort, but due to limited opportunity.

He struggled to secure a consistent spot among the top nine forwards and totaled five points in 22 games while averaging just over ten minutes per night. With Edmonton pushing for consistency and lineup balance, both sides saw value in a clean break.

Earlier in the season, Connor McDavid publicly supported his teammate after his NHL debut, offering rare insight into how the Oilers viewed Tomasek internally. “You can see he’s played a lot of hockey. He’s a great shooter; he’s hit every shot in training. Not everyone has that kind of talent,” McDavid said at the time, praising Tomasek’s skill even as his role remained limited.

For Edmonton, the move is less about performance and more about timing. The Oilers are first in the Pacific, powered by elite scoring and a top-ranked power play, but defensive lapses and tight losses have shown the roster may need tweaking. Clearing Tomasek’s contract provides breathing room in a tight cap situation and opens the door for potential upgrades ahead of the deadline.

As the Oilers move past the holiday stretch and into the New Year, this decision signals a team preparing early rather than reacting late. The standings say Edmonton is in control, but roster flexibility suggests management is already thinking about what it will take to stay there.
