Team Canada’s bid for a third straight Olympic gold medal in NHL-player tournaments ended in heartbreak last month, as they were edged 2-1 in overtime by Team USA at the 2026 Winter Games.
Now, Oilers star Connor McDavid’s wife speaks candidly about Team Canada’s Olympic heartbreak.

With Sidney Crosby out for the final two games due to injury, McDavid took on an even greater leadership role for Team Canada and rose to the occasion.
McDavid powered Canada to the gold-medal game, leading the entire tournament with 13 points, 2 goals, and 11 assists. His dominance earned him MVP honors, Best Forward recognition, and a spot on the Olympic All-Star Team.
In the process, he set a new scoring record for an NHL player at the Winter Games, surpassing the previous 11-point mark held by Finnish legends Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.
But despite outshooting Team USA 42-28 in the final and controlling long stretches of play, Canada couldn’t find the decisive goal in overtime.
After the loss, McDavid’s wife, Lauren Kyle, shared an emotional reflection. “The guys played their absolute heart out and obviously didn’t get the result that we wanted,” Kyle said. “They tried as hard as they possibly could and they did it with such grace and hard work and determination and they just genuinely wanted to be there and love to play…”
“And it’s sometimes not about winning. And sometimes it’s just about showing up and presenting yourself like a true Canadian. I’m just so proud of Connor. Regardless, he did the best he possibly could and put it all out there. And I just could not be more proud of him,” she added.
The tournament itself carried extra weight. It marked the first Olympic Games featuring NHL players since 2014, making the stage feel even bigger. Canada had captured gold in the last two such events, adding to the pressure and expectations.
There was little time to process it all.
McDavid quickly shifted back to NHL action following the Games, rejoining his team for another Stanley Cup push after back-to-back Finals appearances. There was no time to rest; he flew straight from Milan to Anaheim and jumped right back into the lineup.

Kyle admitted the turnaround was tough to watch. “Now being back thrown into the schedule, especially Connor. I can’t believe he has to go back and he was playing right away, like two back-to-back games.”
Despite the disappointment, Kyle said the experience is something she’ll cherish forever. “I have memories that I’m going to have for a lifetime,” she added.
For McDavid, the page has already turned to another Stanley Cup pursuit in Edmonton.

I love Canada but let’s realize it’s a game USA won you skated faster we won. We will take our players back if you do not want them. Sorry we realize our countries have problems especially Trump. We suffer with his decisions too.
If you suffer with President Trump’s decisions, you’re in sad shape! This country is by far better off than we have been in quite some time.
