Matthew Tkachuk found himself at the center of another storm on Thursday night. This one had the entire hockey world buzzing.
In a lopsided 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers star ignited chaos that quickly turned into one of the most talked-about moments of the season. What followed was a third-period meltdown filled with haymakers, misconducts, and a headline-grabbing showdown between Tkachuk and Lightning forward Brandon Hagel.
Chaos Erupts With Panthers Targeting Nikita Kucherov
It started in the third period when Panthers defenseman Nikko Mikkola checked Kucherov down on his way to the bench. Seconds later, Tkachuk jumped off the bench and went directly towards Kucherov, shoving him from behind – a move that instantly kicked things off.
Hagel came to defend his teammate as he dropped the gloves with Tkachuk and unloaded a series of blows. He clearly got the better of the exchange before both players lost their footing and crashed to the ice.
They weren’t the only ones throwing punches. Gustav Forsling tangled with J.J. Moser, continuing to swing as Moser went down. Donovan Sebrango and Darren Raddysh squared off in a separate scrum.
By the time order was restored, nine players had been handed 10-minute misconducts. In total, officials assessed a staggering 114 penalty minutes. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice was ejected from the game as well.
To no one’s surprise, the hockey world lit up on social media almost immediately.
SDPN executive producer Drew Livingstone quipped, “Tkachuk is the toughest guy in the NHL when the other guy isn’t lookin.” CTV News’ Hunter Crowther added with tongue firmly in cheek, “Canada owes a debt to Brandon Hagel for his continued contributions of punching Matthew Tkachuk in the face.”
The Athletic’s Thomas Drance embraced the chaos in full poetic form, writing, “God, this rocks. Hagel, Canadian hero, chucking absolute haymakers at Tkachuk… A Renaissance painting worth of incredible details and shenanigans.”
NHL analyst Evan Closky summed up the scene bluntly: “What is Matthew Tkachuk doing here? Brandon Hagel seems to win another fight against Tkachuk… Paul Maurice tossed. Even before the Olympics, we can’t escape the hatred.”
The bad blood between Hagel and Tkachuk is nothing new. The two famously dropped the gloves just nine seconds into last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off round-robin game between the United States and Canada, and Thursday’s clash only added fuel to an already intense rivalry.
With the Olympic break now underway, the rivalry could spill onto an even bigger stage if their paths cross during the Games.
