NHL World Plays Blame Game After Quinn Hughes’ Comical Error Deflates Minnesota Wild in Game 2 Loss Vs. Dallas

The NHL world is starting to question Norris Trophy candidate Quinn Hughes after his comical error in the Minnesota Wild’s Game 2 loss to Dallas Stars. The team entered the game seeking a 2-0 series lead, but instead struggled to execute in important moments against a structured Stars offense.

The game’s momentum shifted completely in the early third period, but it was a late third period mistake from Hughes that widened the gap, sealing the 4-2 defeat. That specific blunder has now become the main talking point across the league.

Quinn Hughes’ Error Sparks NHL Reactions After Wild Fall 4–2 to Stars

Hughes found himself at the center of attention following a late-game misread that sealed Minnesota’s 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday. With under a minute remaining and the Wild trailing by one, Wyatt Johnston cleared the puck down the ice toward an empty net. Hughes chased the rolling puck but slowed slightly, expecting the puck to miss the net.

Instead, it curled inside the post, ending the game and leveling the series at 1-1.

The moment went viral online, especially after Minnesota shared its final score graphic featuring Hughes. The play drew mixed reactions, with several voices questioning the read and Hughes’ decision.

Stone Strankman, a reporter covering the Stars, reacted on X by asking, “Does Quinn Hughes ever play defense?” Analyst Tim Cowlishaw also shared that view, pointing to a broader matchup concern, writing, “Stars have had all the 4 on 4 against Quinn Hughes they want.”

As the clip of the play circulated, more reactions followed, including from the account Top Tier Hockey, which posted the video with the caption, “Hot take: Quinn Hughes is just one of those players you will never win a cup with as long as he’s on the roster.” While that opinion leaned strongly, it pointed out how one moment can lead to harsh criticism in playoff hockey.

Michael Dixon, another Stars reporter, took a lighter tone, sharing the clip of Hughes’ colliding with the boards after his bad read, and calling it “The beautiful game.”

Ryan Henderson, producer of the Donnie & Dhali podcast, focused on the technical aspect, noting, “Hughes stopped skating on that play, where have we seen that before?”

Notwithstanding that glaring error, Hughes had a productive night with two assists and logged 28:35 of ice time alongside Brock Faber. The heavy workload showed his importance to the team, even as frustration became visible after the final goal, where he slid into the boards.

Dallas, meanwhile, executed well in the second period and in the early third period, and kept itself in the game. Johnston scored twice, while Matt Duchene added a goal and an assist. Jason Robertson also contributed, and goaltender Jake Oettinger made 28 saves to secure the win.

With the series tied, both teams now shift focus to Game 3 on April 22, where momentum remains up for grabs.
