NHL Trade Rumors: Panthers Could Move For Another Stanley Cup-Winning Goalie With Sergei Bobrovsky Nearing Exit

The Florida Panthers are closing a season that slipped away after months of roster instability and missed time for top players. Their early exit has forced the organization to reassess several areas, with goaltending now a clear focus, especially regarding Sergei Bobrovsky’s future.

A team that once relied on stability in net is suddenly dealing with uncertainty heading into the 2026 offseason. With contract talks involving Bobrovsky unresolved and performance trending down, everyone is looking at what comes next in goal.

Panthers Weigh Goalie Change As Sergei Bobrovsky’s Future Remains Uncertain

Bobrovsky has reached a crucial point in his time with Florida, as his 7-year, $70 million deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, and extension talks have not progressed smoothly. The veteran goaltender, who helped deliver back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2024 and 2025, is now part of a situation insiders describe as increasingly uncertain.

Speaking on The Sheet, Greg Wyshynski offered a blunt assessment, saying, “I think the situation with Bob and Florida is pretty bad… there is a significant gap in what he’s looking for and what they’re willing to give him.” He added that the team may “go in a different direction,” signaling a potential shift despite Bobrovsky’s past importance.

That possibility gained more traction when Jeff Marek floated a scenario involving Jordan Binnington. He asked whether Florida could move on and bring in the St. Louis Blues netminder, prompting Wyshynski’s surprised reaction, “Oh my God, wow. Now you’re talking.” While speculative, the idea reflects how wide open the situation has become.

Binnington, a Stanley Cup winner, fits the profile of a playoff-tested goalie, and with St. Louis leaning toward younger options, he could become available. Marek pointed out that with Florida’s defensive structure, “is there a world where that happens?” Wyshynski even noted that “they could probably work something for him,” adding that such a move would make sense if the Blues transition away from him.

Florida’s internal evaluation is complicated by Bobrovsky’s recent performance dip, which included a career-low save percentage and difficult outings late in the season. Still, context matters. Injuries to core players like Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk left the roster depleted, directly affecting defensive support and overall results in front of the net.

Despite the numbers, Bobrovsky remains respected inside the room, often described as the backbone behind the franchise’s recent championships. The organization also lacks a clear upgrade internally, with backup options delivering mixed results across the same stretch.

How Bobrobsky’s future unfolds in Florida will be a storyline to watch around free agency in 2026.
